1. Efeito de características estruturais da quitosana sobre sua interação com filmes de Langmuir como modelo de biomembrana / Effects from the structural characteristics of chitosan on its interaction in Langmuir films as biomembrane models.
Chitosans are polysaccharides used in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and in the inhibition of microorganisms growth (eg. as bactericidal agent). In these applications their action should depend on the interaction with cell membranes, which is difficult to verify because isolating a membrane is not easy. An alternative is to investigate the interaction with me

2. Análise de glicosaminoglicanos e proteoglicanos em linhagens tumorais de próstata / Analysis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans in prostate cancer cell lines
Proteoglycans (PG) are cell surface, extracellular matrix and citoplasmatic granule macromolecules, that play an important role in cellcell and cell-matrix interactions. Several studies indicated that significant changes in PG content occur in the tumor stroma of epithelial neoplasms and that these alterations influence tumor growth and invasion. In this stu

3. Evaluating conditions for the formation of chitosan/gelatin microparticles
Chitosan/gelatin microparticles were prepared by complex coacervation. Three chitosan (CH) samples, with different acetylation degrees and intrinsic viscosities, were used together with commercial gelatin (G) samples. Microparticles formation was investigated at various CH/G ratios, within the pH range of 3.5 to 6.0. Reactions were carried out at 40 and 60

4. Production of polygalacturonase by the Aspergillus niger 3T5B8 mutant strain by solid state fermentation in column bioreactors / Produção de poligalacturonase pela linhagem Aspergillus niger mutante 3T5B8 por fermentação semi-sólida em biorreatores de coluna

5. Developmental control of glucosamine and galactosamine levels during conidation in Neurospora crassa.
The glucosamine and galactosamine content of mycelia was measured in cultures of Neurospora crassa grown on the surface of dialysis membranes. The glucosamine content was relatively constant throughout the different regions of the mycelial mat. The galactosamine content, however, was always lower in the growing-front region of the mycelial mat than in the ol

6. Occurrence of Glucosamine Residues with Free Amino Groups in Cell Wall Peptidoglycan from Bacilli as a Factor Responsible for Resistance to Lysozyme
Analysis by dinitrophenylation techniques revealed the occurrence of significant amounts of glucosamine residues with free amino groups in the peptidoglycan component of cell walls isolated from Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus megaterium. A close correlation was demonstrated between the content of N-unacetylated glucosamine residues in the p

7. Effects of 2-deoxyglucose, glucosamine, and mannose on cell fusion and the glycoproteins of herpes simplex virus.
2-Deoxyglucose and glucosamine were found to inhibit cell fusion caused by a syncytial mutant of herpes simplex virus and to inhibit the glycosylation of viral glycoproteins in the infected cells. The inhibition of fusion and the inhibition of glycosylation caused by 2-deoxyglucose were substantially prevented when mannose was also present during infection.

8. Glycoprotein Metabolism in the Cotyledons of Pisum sativum during Development and Germination 1
The glycoprotein nature of legumin and vicilin, the reserve globulins in the cotyledons of Pisum sativum was studied. Legumin from mature seed was found to contain 1% neutral sugars (mannose and glucose) and 0.1% amino sugar (glucosamine), whereas vicilin contained 0.3% neutral sugar (mannose) and 0.2% amino sugar (glucosamine). On the basis of the incorpora

9. Elevated Cell Wall Serine in Pleiotropic Staphylococcal Mutants
Korman, Ruth Z. (Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.). Elevated cell wall serine in pleiotropic staphylococcal mutants. J. Bacteriol. 92:762–768. 1966.—Physically purified cell walls were prepared from two staphylococcal strains and from pleiotropic variants derived from them. The quantitative amino acid and amino sugar content of these walls is reported. T

10. Changes in glucosamine and galactosamine levels during conidial germination in Neurospora crassa.
The levels of glucosamine and galactosamine were determined in conidia, germinating conidia, and vegetative mycelia of Neurospora crassa. In the vegetative mycelia about 90% of the amino sugars were shown to be components of the cell wall. The remaining 10% of the amino sugars were tentatively identified as the nucleotide sugars uridine diphospho-2-acetamido

11. Chitosan as a Component of Pea-Fusarium solani Interactions 12
Chitosan, a polymer of β-1,4-linked glucosamine residues with a strong affinity for DNA, was implicated in the pea pod-Fusarium solani interaction as an elicitor of phytoalexin production, an inhibitor of fungal growth and a chemical which can protect pea tissue from infection by F. solani f. sp. pisi. Purified Fusarium fungal cell walls can elicit phytoale

12. Comparison of Coccidioides immitis arthrospore, mycelium, and spherule cell walls, and influence of growth medium on mycelial cell wall composition.
Comparative lipid content, cell wall yield, neutral monosaccharide, glucosamine, and protein (amino acid) contents of arthrospores, mycelia, and spherules of Coccidioides immitis Cash were studied. Cellular lipid contents were found in the decreasing order: spherules, arthrospores, mycelia. Lipid content of mycelia did not reach the level of arthrospores or
