1. [PROVISIONAL] Birth defects in Brazil: Outcomes of a population-based study
Abstract Birth defects (BDs) are functional and structural alterations in embryonic or fetal development. With an incidence of approximately 3-5%, BDs are a leading cause of infant mortality and lifelong disability. A population-based prospective case-control study was conducted for one year with 5204 infants, between 1st March 2011 and 29th February 2012, i

2. Treatment of infertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: approach to clinical practice
Polycystic ovary syndrome represents 80% of anovulatory infertility cases. Treatment initially includes preconception guidelines, such as lifestyle changes (weight loss), folic acid therapy to prevent the risk of fetal neural tube defects and halting the consumption of tobacco and alcohol. The first-line pharmacological treatment for inducing ovulation consi

3. Maternal drinking behavior and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in adolescents with criminal behavior in southern Brazil
Prenatal alcohol exposure can have serious and permanent adverse effects. The developing brain is the most vulnerable organ to the insults of prenatal alcohol exposure. A behavioral phenotype of prenatal alcohol exposure including conduct disorders is also described. This study on a sample of Brazilian adolescents convicted for criminal behavior aimed to eva

4. Prenatal alcohol exposure did not affect impulsivity in rats that performed delay or probability discounting tasks
Individuals who fall under the spectrum of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have a higher prevalence of several cognitive disturbances, including a greater probability of being diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some of these effects, such as hyperactivity and attentional impairments, are already well established in the literature. The

5. Tomada de decisão mediada por tempo e probabilidade em ratos expostos ao álcool antes do nascimento / Decision making mediated by time and probability in rats prenatally exposed to ethanol

6. Mulheres alcoolistas: histórico reprodutivo e alterações do crescimento e desenvolvimento dos filhos
Alcohol is the most used teratogenic substance in the west world and its use during pregnancy, from moderate to severe, is a serious problem to public health due to the risks that it might bring to the mother (increases the risks for spontaneous abortions and premature detachment of the placenta) and to the fetus (physical, mental and behaviour damage and/or

7. Efeitos do etanol e/ou metilmercúrio no desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso central : alterações morfológicas e comportamentais em ratos adultos
Studies involving alcohol and its interactions with other neurotoxicants represent the focus of several researches due to the fact that the use of alcohol can sometimes lead to serious health problems. Fetal exposure to alcohol and mercury has a high incidence in some regions of Brazil, especially in mining areas habited by alcoholics pregnant women. This st

9. Ocular manifestations in fetal alcohol syndrome.
Eight children with the fetal alcohol syndrome are described with ocular anomalies. They all had a strong history of maternal alcohol abuse throughout pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. All the children had eye abnormalities. These included external eye lesions, Peters' anomaly, lens opacification, ocular motility disorders, and optic nerve hypopl

11. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: Canadian guidelines for diagnosis
THE DIAGNOSIS OF FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER (FASD) is complex and guidelines are warranted. A subcommittee of the Public Health Agency of Canada's National Advisory Committee on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder reviewed, analysed and integrated current approaches to diagnosis to reach agreement on a standard in Canada. The purpose of this paper is to rev

12. Loss of myelinated axons is specific to the central nervous system in a mouse model of the fetal alcohol syndrome.
We have previously developed a mouse model of the fetal alcohol syndrome, the outcome of which is a late loss of myelinated axons in the optic nerve of offspring of alcohol-treated mice between 9 and 15 wk of age. We have extended this study to investigate whether this axon loss is stable and specific to the central nervous system. Pregnant female (C57BL/6/W
