13. Pharmacological characterization of ASP49 PLA2 isolated from Bothrops pauloensis venom / Caracterização farmacologica de uma fosfolipase A2 ASP49 isolada do veneno de Bothrops pauloensis
Bothropic venom has several substances necessary to serpent survival, among them, one of the most widely studied are phospholipase A2 enzymes, that hydrolise sn-2 from membrane phospholipids, releasing lysophospholipids and fatty acids, which beyond playing a biological action in the lipid digestion process, also exhibit a wide variety of pharmacological eff

14. Rat hindlimb joint immobilization with acrylic resin orthoses
The objective of the present study was to propose an orthosis of light material that would be functional for the animal and that would maintain only the ankle joint immobilized. Male Wistar rats (3 to 4 months old, 250-300 g) were divided into 2 groups (N = 6): control and immobilized for 7 days. Rats were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg wei

15. Expressão de fatores de regulação miogenica e metaloproteinases no musculo estriado esqueletico de ratos com insuficiencia cardiaca / Myogenic regulatory factors and metalloproteinase expression in rat skeletal muscle with heart failure
Background: Heart failure (HF) is associated with a skeletal muscle myopathy with increased expression of fast myosin heavy chains (MHC) and extracellular matrix (ECM) alterations. The skeletal muscle-specific molecular regulatory mechanisms controlling MHC expression during HF have not been described. Myogenic regulatory factors (MRF), a family of transcrip

16. Ectopic development of skeletal muscle induced by subcutaneous transplant of rat satellite cells
The present study analyzes the ectopic development of the rat skeletal muscle originated from transplanted satellite cells. Satellite cells (10(6) cells) obtained from hindlimb muscles of newborn female 2BAW Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously into the dorsal area of adult male rats. After 3, 7, and 14 days, the transplanted tissues (N = 4-5) were proce

17. Expressão da oxido nitrico sintase em musculo esqueletico de ratos cronicamente tratados com L-NAME : estudos histoenzimologicos, bioquimicos e imunohistoquimicos
Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived gas molecule that modulates neurotransmission, contractile force, glucose metabolism, vascular tone, and muscle function in general. Skeletal muscle is a major source of NO in mammals and expresses all three isoforms of NO synthases (NOS). Inhibitors of the NOS are useful tools for studying the role of NO in muscle physiolo

18. Effect of perimuscular injection of Bothrops jararacussu venom on plasma creatine kinase levels in mice: influence of dose and volume
The effect of dose and volume of a perimuscular injection of Bothrops jararacussu venom on myonecrosis of skeletal muscle was studied in mice. An increase of the venom dose (0.25 to 2.0 µg/g) at a given volume (50 µl) resulted in an increase in plasma creatine kinase (CK) levels 2 h after injection. Plasma CK activity increased from the basal level of 129.

19. Ação do veneno total de Bothrops pirajai e de suas frações miotoxicas piratoxinas I e III sobre a musculatura esqueletica : estudos in vitro
Several reasons can be cited which motivate the study of natural substances such as the characterization of the active principles and its biological effects. Among them, the ophidic venoms stand out because it is common the occurrence of accidental envenomation after snake bites in tropical countries. In Brazil, ophidic accidents account for a major part in

20. Feed artery role in blood flow control to rat hindlimb skeletal muscles.
1. Vasomotor tone and reactivity were investigated in feed arteries of the extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles. Feed arteries are located external to the muscle and give rise to the microcirculation within each muscle. Resting diameter was smaller in feed arteries of the soleus muscle. 2. Feed arteries of both muscles dilated to similar peak values

21. Neural regulation on the active sodium-potassium transport in hypokalaemic rat skeletal muscles.
C.N.S.-induced suppression of muscle Na-pump activity was studied in fast 'twitch' muscle, extensor digitorum longus, of hypokalaemic rats which were fed a K-deficient diet for 0-9 weeks. The results were compared with those of slow 'tonic' muscle, soleus, reported previously. K-deficient diet caused blood hypokalaemia and a considerable K+ loss and Na+ accu

22. A comparison of the effects of denervation on the mechanical properties of rat and guinea-pig skeletal muscle.
1. A fast (extensor digitorum longus) and slow (soleus) twitch muscle were denervated in rats and guinea-pigs and isometric and isotonic contractions were followed for periods of up to 6 months after. 2. The decay of tetanic tension with time could be described as exponential. The rate of decay of tension was greatest in rat soleus and least in guinea-pig so

23. Connective tissue changes and physical properties of developing and ageing skeletal muscle.
Selective staining of the connective tissue and image analysis showed that in the extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles of the rat there was an increase in the thickness of the endomysium in both early growth and senility. The perimysium thickness was more or less constant throughout life except in senility when the concentration of this component als

24. Compensatory muscular hypertrophy in the extensor digitorum longus muscle of the mouse.
Hypertrophy of the extensor digitorum longus muscle after surgical removal of its companion tibialis anterior muscle has been studied in mice. Early, intermediate and late stages in the process of hypertrophy have been defined. The proportional increase in the man cross sectional area of fibres in a hypertrophic muscle consistently exceeded the proportional
