13. Speculative attacks and currency crisis: the 2002 Brazilian crisis analysis / Ataques especulativos e crises cambiais: uma análise da crise brasileira de 2002
Since the middle of the 1990s economic research relative to speculative attacks has focused attention on developing a new generation model to predict ex ante the likelihood of a currency crisis on a specific country or region. This new family of currency crisis models was denominated Early Warning Systems, well known as EWS Models. This paper examines the 20

14. Mensuração do risco sistêmico no setor bancário com utilização de variáveis contábeis e econômicas / Systemic risk measurement in the banking sector with accounting and economic variables
The systemic risk in the financial system has been a constant concern for the international institutions and supervisory authorities. The financial crises occurred in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Russia, and other countries, have caused significant economic damages and high social costs. The related researches have tried to find common characteristics able

15. Indicadores de sustentabilidade em sistemas agroecolÃgicos por agricultores familiares do semi-Ãrido cearense / AgroecolÃgicos pointers of sustentabilidade in system lead by family agriculturists at the Cearà state semiarid
To evaluate the farmerâs perception about the changes in their systems and in some production pointers, the present work was developed with farmers that adopt cotton production systems in agroecolÃgicas bases at the Cearà state semiarid. The cotton plant production proposal in the commented bases has the effective participation of farmers in the whole pro

Since the discovery of QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics), there have been remarkable technical achievements in perturbative calculations applied to hadrons. However, it is difficult to use QCD directly to compute hadronic properties. In this context, phenomenological potential models have provided extremely satisfactory results on description of ordinary hadrons,

18. Gestão da qualidade total e a industria brasileira de minerio de ferro : limites e possibilidades
The aim of this research is to verify the limitations and possibilities of success for Total Quality Management in the major iron ore exporting companies that account for ca. 95% (in value) of total production in Brasil. For the analysis of difficulties and strategy utilized for the establishment of quality programs, the author used a methodology encompassin

19. Error and efficiency of replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations
We derive simple analytical expressions for the error and computational efficiency of replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations (and by analogy replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations). The theory applies to the important case of systems whose dynamics at long times is dominated by the slow interconversion between two metastable states. As a sp

20. A Mathematical Treatment of Rate Data Obtained in Biological Flow Systems under Nonsteady State Conditions
The problem of determining gas exchange rates from flow system data under nonsteady state conditions is analyzed. A correction factor is presented for obtaining constant rates under nonsteady state conditions. A general formula for obtaining any rate under nonsteady state conditions is also given. Turnover time is defined and discussed in terms of the mathem

21. Development, simulation, and validation of NMR relaxation-based exchange measurements
Two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance correlation experiments have recently been proposed as a means for studying exchange in porous media. Most notable of these is the T2−T2 relaxation exchange spectroscopy (REXSY) experiment. Unfortunately, quantifying exchange with this method requires a relatively long, three-dimensional acquisition. 22. Oscillations in microtubule polymerization: the rate of GTP regeneration on tubulin controls the period.
The essential reactions involved in the oscillatory kinetics of microtubule polymerization have been investigated. The rate of GDP dissociation from tubulin decreased cooperatively upon increasing tubulin concentration above 20 microM, consistent with the formation of GDP oligomers whose dissociation is rate limiting in nucleotide exchange. The apparent rate

23. Permeability measurements on mitochondria from wild-type and poky strains of Neurospora crassa.
The permeability properties of isolated Neurospora mitochondria were determined by measuring the rate at which the mitochondria swell in isotonic solutions of various organic and inorganic molecules. Like mammalian mitochondria, wild-type Neurospora mitochondria were impermeable to sucrose and only slightly more permeable to most inorganic ions (K, Na, Cl).

24. Measuring Gene Flow among Populations Having High Levels of Genetic Fragmentation
We present an analysis of the genetic structures of 22 species of salamanders, with regard to levels of gene flow among populations. We estimate the gene flow parameter, Nm (the product of the effective population number and rate of migration among populations) using two alternative methods described by Wright and Slatkin. For most species, these two methods
