1. CÃdigos corretores de erros para gravaÃÃo magnÃtica
As the need for data explodes with the passage of time as well as the demand for more computing power, data storage becomes more and more important. Magnetic recording using error correcting codes has turned out to be a good solution to make highly reliable and efficient systems. The focus of this dissertation is on how to achieve data reliability and effici

2. EVUATION OF TCP PERFORMANCE IN SATELLITE TRANSMISSION IN PRESENCE OF BURST ERRORS IN THE CHANNEL / AVALIAÇÃO DE DESEMPENHO DO PROTOCOLO TCP NA TRANSMISSÃO VIA SATÉLITE EM PRESENÇA DE ERROS NO CANAL

3. Neuronal activity related to head and eye movements in cat superior colliculus.
1. Movement-related discharges were recorded from single cells in the superior colliculus of alert cats while they made eye saccades (with head fixed) or gaze saccades (with head free). 2. Visual and auditory stimuli were used as saccade targets. In addition, saccades were made to the remembered location of targets and spontaneously, in the absence of target

4. Preventing errors when estimating single channel properties from the analysis of current fluctuations.
The conductance, number, and mean open time of ion channels can be estimated from fluctuations in membrane current. To examine potential errors associated with fluctuation analysis, we simulated ensemble currents and estimated single channel properties. The number (N) and amplitude (i) of the underlying single channels were estimated using nonstationary fluc

5. Novel aspect of amphotericin B action: accumulation in human monocytes potentiates killing of phagocytosed Candida albicans.
The influence of low doses of amphotericin B on the capacity of human monocytes to kill Candida albicans was investigated. Killing rates were quantified by a novel flow cytometric assay and were found to be 37% +/- 3% (standard error of the mean) after 3 h. Preincubation of monocytes for 6 to 20 h with low concentrations of amphotericin B (0.2 microgram/ml)

6. Human Neutrophil-Mediated Nonoxidative Antifungal Activity against Cryptococcus neoformans
It has long been appreciated that polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) kill Cryptococcus neoformans, at least in part via generation of fungicidal oxidants. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of nonoxidative mechanisms to the inhibition and killing of C. neoformans. Treatment of human PMN with inhibitors and scavengers of respiratory burst o

7. Mathematical Analysis of Growth and Interaction Dynamics of Streptomycetes and a Bacteriophage in Soil
We observed the infection cycle of the temperate actinophage KC301 in relation to the growth of its host Streptomyces lividans TK24 in sterile soil microcosms. Despite a large increase in phage population following germination of host spores, there was no observable impact on host population numbers as measured by direct plate counts. The only change in the
