2. Effects of site-specific substitution of 5-fluorouridine on the stabilities of duplex DNA and RNA.
The effects of 5-fluorouridine (FUrd) and 5-fluorodeoxyuridine (FdUrd) substitution on the stabilities of duplex RNA and DNA have been studied to determine how FUrd substitution in nucleic acids may alter the efficiency of biochemical processes that require complementary base pairing for molecular recognition. The parent sequence, 5'-GCGAAUUCGC, contains two

3. Probing the ethanol-induced chain interdigitations in gel-state bilayers of mixed-chain phosphatidylcholines.
Using high-resolution differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we have studied the effects of ethanol concentrations, [EtOH], on the main phase transition temperatures (T[m]) of the following mixed-chain phosphatidylcholines (PCs): C(15):C(17)PC, C(17):C(15)PC, and C(12):C(20)PC. These lipids have a common molecular weight; however, their apparent acyl chain

4. Prediction of the stability of DNA triplexes.
We present rules that allow one to predict the stability of DNA pyrimidine.purine.pyrimidine (Y.R.Y) triple helices on the basis of the sequence. The rules were derived from van't Hoff analysis of 23 oligonucleotide triplexes tested at a variety of pH values. To predict the enthalpy of triplex formation (delta H degrees), a simple nearest-neighbor model was

5. Deoxydodecanucleotide heteroduplex d(TTTTATAATAAA). d(TTTATTATAAAA) containing the promoter Pribnow sequence TATAAT. I. Double-helix stability by UV spectrophotometry and calorimetry.
Thermally induced structural transition in the d(TTTTATAATAAA) d(TTTATTATAAAA) heteroduplex is characterized by UV-spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. At low salt (less than 0.1 M) the occurrence of a cooperative transition in the lower temperature range, followed by a broad transition connected with small increase in absorbance is observed.

6. Effect of 5-methylcytosine on the stability of triple-stranded DNA--a thermodynamic study.
We have previously shown that the pyrimidine oligonucleotide 5'CTTCCTCCTCT (Y11) recognizes the double-helical stem of hairpin 5'GAAGGAGGAGA-T4-TCTCCTCCTTC (h26) by triple-helix formation (1). In this paper, we report the effect on triplex formation of substituting the cytosine residues of Y11 with 5-methylcytosines (5meY11). In addition, we have studied the

7. Thermodynamic parameters for loop formation in RNA and DNA hairpin tetraloops.
We determined the melting temperatures (Tm) and thermodynamic parameters of 15 RNA and 19 DNA hairpins at 1 M NaCl, 0.01 M sodium phosphate, 0.1 mM EDTA, at pH 7. All these hairpins have loops of four bases, the most common loop size in 16S and 23S ribosomal RNAs. The RNA hairpins varied in loop sequence, loop-closing base pair (A.U, C.G, or G.C), base seque
