1. Rabies encephalitis and extra-neural manifestations in a patient bitten by a domestic cat
ABSTRACT Rabies encephalitis is a fatal zoonotic viral disease transmitted to humans either by domestic animals like dogs and cats or by wild animals like bats, skunks and raccoons. We present the case of a 25-year-old woman admitted due to behavioral disorders, generalized paresthesiasand acute respiratory deterioration compatible with a respiratory distres

2. Pediatric minor head trauma: do cranial CT scans change the therapeutic approach?
OBJECTIVES: 1) To verify clinical signs correlated with appropriate cranial computed tomography scan indications and changes in the therapeutic approach in pediatric minor head trauma scenarios. 2) To estimate the radiation exposure of computed tomography scans with low dose protocols in the context of trauma and the additional associated risk. METHODS: In

Several studies have discussed factors that govern the longevity of onlay bone grafts. However, little information has been made available on molecular events that occur over time. Cranial bone grafts have been reported to produce greater responses compared to other donor regions in maxillofacial reconstructions, but necessary scientific verification was sti

4. Clinical tomographic correlations of 220 patients with neurocisticercosis, Bahia, Brazil
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common parasitic disease in our region, presenting diversity of neurological symptoms and signs. The present study has as primary objective an evaluation of the NCC's clinical and epidemiological profile within Bahia State, by means of a prospective study of 220 patients diagnosed from March 1988 to March 1999, with a follow-up

6. The value of investigation for genetic counselling in tuberous sclerosis.
Forty sets of parents and 24 sibs of patients with tuberous sclerosis were investigated by an extensive protocol, including clinical examination of skin, hair, and oral cavity, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, cranial CT scan, renal ultrasound, and a radiological skeletal survey. None of the clinical examinations provided evidence that any of the subjects

7. Unusual cranial and abdominal computed tomographic (CT) scan appearances in a case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
A 35 year old woman presented with headache and fever. Computed brain tomography showed diffuse low attenuation in the cerebral white matter. Several months later, serological tests for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) became positive. In spite of immunosuppressive therapy she relapsed after six months of treatment, presenting with abdominal symptoms and s

8. Cranial CT in the haemolytic uraemic syndrome.
A patient with the haemolytic uraemic syndrome and severe encephalopathy is described. The initial extensive brain hypodensity on CT scan was followed 10 days later by diffuse enhancement of the cerebral gray-white matter interface. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is suggested.

9. Agenesis of the corpus callosum in two brothers.
Two brothers with developmental delay and unusual cranial configurations were found to have agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) by CT scan. Six published families in which ACC occurred in the absence of extracranial malformations are reviewed. No single mode of inheritance can account for all of these familial cases. This family illustrates the value of CT

10. Arachnoid cysts in a brother and sister.
We describe a brother and sister with microcephaly and mental retardation who were shown by cranial CT scan to have almost identical unilateral arachnoid cysts. The occurrence in sibs suggests the possibility of a genetic basis for at least some cases of arachnoid cysts.

11. Diagnostic and counselling difficulties using a fully comprehensive screening protocol for families at risk for tuberous sclerosis.
Tuberous sclerosis (TS) results from an autosomal dominant gene which exhibits variable expression and reduced penetrance. Although there are well established diagnostic criteria for TS, examination of first degree relatives can cause diagnostic criteria for TS, examination of first degree relatives can cause diagnostic problems with consequent difficulties

12. Cerebral radionecrosis: is surgery necessary?
Seven patients with cerebral necrosis after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the nasopharynx are presented. The clinical features included seizures and a varying degree of intellectual impairment. In spite of significant mass effect on CT scan, the patients remained alert, ambulatory and independent. We believe that some cases of cerebral necrosis following rad
