1. Evaluation of a computer model to simulate water table response to subirrigation.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the water flow computer model, WATABLE, using experimental field observations on water table management plots from a site located near Hastings, FL, USA. The experimental field had scale drainage systems with provisions for subirrigation with buried microirrigation and conventional seepage irrigation systems. Potato

2. RESIDUALS FROM TWO HERBICIDES IMAZETHAPYR AND IMAZAPIC ON PADDY RICE WITH DIFFERENTS SOIL MANAGEMENTS / RESIDUAL DA MISTURA FORMULADA DOS HERBICIDAS IMAZETHAPYR E IMAZAPIC EM ÁREAS DE ARROZ SOB DIFERENTES MANEJOS DE SOLO
Red rice (Oryza spp.) is one of the main limiting factors of rice yield (O. sativa L.) in the world and particularly in the Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state Brazil. The Clearfield technology is a viable and efficient tool for controlling such harmful plant by using imidazolinone herbicides in tolerant cultivars. However, herbicides may persist on the soil after

A new method for dynamic studies, in situ, of water infiltration in the unsaturated zone of soil.
Agriculture is the human activity that most affects the environment. Huge amounts of chemicals are applied on the soil. Pesticides percolation and runoff degrades water resources. Thus, soil hydraulic properties must be known due to their influence on solute transport. The measurement of these properties and the modelling of related parameters are often diff

5. Paths to self-organized criticality
We present a pedagogical introduction to self-organized criticality (SOC), unraveling its connections with nonequilibrium phase transitions. There are several paths from a conventional critical point to SOC. They begin with an absorbing-state phase transition (directed percolation is a familiar example), and impose supervision or driving on the system; two c

6. Movement of Endotoxin Through Soil Columns
Land treatment of wastewater is an attractive alternative to conventional sewage treatment systems and is gaining widespread acceptance. Although land application systems prevent surface water pollution and augment the available water supplies, the potential dangers to human health should be evaluated. Since sewage may contain high amounts of bacterial endot

7. Microbiological Comparison of Surface Soil and Unsaturated Subsurface Soil from a Semiarid High Desert
Thirty-two chemoheterotrophic bacteria were isolated from unsaturated subsurface soil samples obtained from ca. 70 m below land surface in a high desert in southeastern Idaho. Most isolates were gram positive (84%) and strict aerobes (79%). Acridine orange direct counts of microbes in one subsurface sample showed lower numbers than similar counts performed o
