1. Novel molecular evidence of population structure in Anopheles (Kerteszia) bellator from Brazilian Atlantic Forest
Anopheles bellator is a primary malaria vector in the Atlantic Forest. Partial sequences of timeless and Clock genes were used to assess the genetic differentiation of five Brazilian populations, which showed strong population structure (e.g. high F ST values and fixed differences) in all pairwise comparisons between Bahia sample and the others from Paraná

2. Genetic variations in circadian rhythm genes and susceptibility for myocardial infarction
Abstract Disruption of endogenous circadian rhythms has been shown to increase the risk of developing myocardial infarction (MI), suggesting that circadian genes might play a role in determining disease susceptibility. We conducted a case-control study on 200 patients hospitalized due to MI and 200 healthy controls, investigating the association between MI a

3. Circadian clock of Aedes aegypti: effects of blood-feeding, insemination and RNA interference
Mosquitoes are the culprits of some of the most important vector borne diseases. A species’ potential as a vector is directly dependent on their pattern of behaviour, which is known to change according to the female’s physiological status such as whether the female is virgin/mated and unfed/blood-fed. However, the molecular mechanism triggered by and/or

4. When population and evolutionary genetics met behaviour
In this review, we analyse the impact of a population and evolutionary genetics approach on the study of insect behaviour. Our attention is focused on the model organism Drosophila melanogaster and several other insect species. In particular, we explore the relationship between rhythmic behaviours and the molecular evolution of clock and ion channel genes.

5. The expression of melanopsin and clock genes in Xenopus laevis melanophores and their modulation by melatonin
Vertebrates have a central clock and also several peripheral clocks. Light responses might result from the integration of light signals by these clocks. The dermal melanophores of Xenopus laevis have a photoreceptor molecule denominated melanopsin (OPN4x). The mechanisms of the circadian clock involve positive and negative feedback. We hypothesize that these

6. Papel da melatonina na regulação da ritmicidade circadiana de tecidos periféricos envolvidos com o metabolismo energético: avaliação do perfil diário da expressão dos genes relógio (clock genes). / Role of melatonin in regulating circadian rhythms in peripheral tissues involved in energy metabolism: evaluation of the daily profile of the expression of clock genes.
Investigamos o papel da me

7. Relógios biológicos e padrões de alimentação em camundongos normais e com sobrepeso / Biological clocks and feeding patterns in normal mice and overweight

8. Interactions of polymorphisms in different clock genes associated with circadian phenotypes in humans
Several studies have shown that mutations and polymorphisms in clock genes are associated with abnormal circadian parameters in humans and also with more subtle non-pathological phenotypes like chronotypes. However, there have been conflicting results, and none of these studies analyzed the combined effects of more than one clock gene. Up to date, associatio

9. Do Caucasian and Asian clocks tick differently?
The Period 3 and Clock genes are important components of the mammalian molecular circadian system. Studies have shown association between polymorphisms in these clock genes and circadian phenotypes in different populations. Nevertheless, differences in the pattern of allele frequency and genotyping distribution are systematically observed in studies with dif

11. Ethanol consumption and its influences in the daily profile of pineal melatonin. Consequences to the central nervous system and the clock genes transcription. / Influência da ingestão de álcool na produção de melatonina pineal e suas consequências sobre a expressão dos receptores de melatonina e dos genes relógio no Sistema Nervoso Central.
It has been demonstrated that alcohol consumption induces complications in sleep onset and maintenance but its influence on melatonin production remains unclear. The present results show that rats receiving 10% ethanol in drinking water for 35 days display an altered melatonin daily profile, with a reduction in the nocturnal mean. This can be partially expla

12. Retina de aves como sistema circadiano e sua modulação por luz e glutamato / Avian retina as a circadian system and its modulation by light and glutamate
The avian circadian system is composed by the retina, the mammalian homolog region of the supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SNC) and the pineal gland. The retina itself shows many rhythmic physiological events, such as movements of photoreceptor cells, opsin expression, retinaldehyde re-isomerization, melatonin and dopamine production and release. Altogether these r
