13. Effects of Chill Stress on Prompt and Delayed Chlorophyll Fluorescence from Leaves 1
This paper describes the utilization of a portable solid state device for the simultaneous measurement of prompt and delayed fluorescence transients in leaves from a variety of species subjected to temperature lowering. The induction transients of the two phenomena were not identical as the peak in prompt fluorescence yield always preceded that of delayed fl

14. Mapping Intercellular CO2 Mole Fraction (Ci) in Rosa rubiginosa Leaves Fed with Abscisic Acid by Using Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging1 : Significance of Ci Estimated from Leaf Gas Exchange
Imaging of photochemical yield of photosystem II (PSII) computed from leaf chlorophyll fluorescence images and gas-exchange measurements were performed on Rosa rubiginosa leaflets during abscisic acid (ABA) addition. In air ABA induced a decrease of both the net CO2 assimilation (An) and the stomatal water vapor conductance (gs). After ABA treatment, i

15. In Vivo Interactions between Photosynthesis, Mitorespiration, and Chlororespiration in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii
Interactions between photosynthesis, mitochondrial respiration (mitorespiration), and chlororespiration have been investigated in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using flash illumination and a bare platinum electrode. Depending on the physiological status of algae, flash illumination was found to induce either a fast (t1/2 ≈ 300 ms) or slow (t1/2

16. A zeaxanthin-independent nonphotochemical quenching mechanism localized in the photosystem II core complex
Illumination of dark-adapted barley plants with low light transiently induced a large nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence. This reaction was identified as a form of high-energy-state quenching. Its appearance was not accompanied by zeaxanthin synthesis but was associated with a reversible inactivation of a fraction of photosystem II (PSII)

17. Effect of Growth Temperature on the Lipid and Fatty Acid Composition, and the Dependence on Temperature of Light-induced Redox Reactions of Cytochrome f and of Light Energy Redistribution in the Thermophilic Blue-Green Alga Synechococcus lividus1
The thermophilic blue-green alga Synechococcus lividus was grown at 55 and 38 C. Arrhenius plots of the transient reduction of cytochrome during actinic illumination with light that excited both pigment systems revealed breaks near 43 and 26 C for cells grown at 55 C. In cells grown at 38 C these breaks occurred near 37 and 28 C, respectively. The shift from

18. Directed disruption of the tobacco ndhB gene impairs cyclic electron flow around photosystem I
To evaluate the physiological significance of cyclic electron flow around photosystem (PS) I, we used a reverse genetic approach to focus on 11 chloroplast genes that encode homologs of mitochondrial complex I subunits (ndhA-K). Since their discovery, the exact function of the respiratory components in plant chloroplasts has been a matter of discussion. We d

19. Functional asymmetry of photosystem II D1 and D2 peripheral chlorophyll mutants of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii
The peripheral accessory chlorophylls (Chls) of the photosystem II (PSII) reaction center (RC) are coordinated by a pair of symmetry-related histidine residues (D1-H118 and D2-H117). These Chls participate in energy transfer from the proximal antennae complexes (CP43 and CP47) to the RC core chromophores. In addition, one or both of the peripheral Chls are r

20. Salicylic Acid Alleviates the Cadmium Toxicity in Barley Seedlings1
Salicylic acid (SA) plays a key role in plant disease resistance and hypersensitive cell death but is also implicated in hardening responses to abiotic stressors. Cadmium (Cd) exposure increased the free SA contents of barley (Hordeum vulgare) roots by a factor of about 2. Cultivation of dry barley caryopses presoaked in SA-containing solution for only 6 h o

21. Modification of Carbon Partitioning, Photosynthetic Capacity, and O2 Sensitivity in Arabidopsis Plants with Low ADP-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase Activity1
Wild-type Arabidopsis plants, the starch-deficient mutant TL46, and the near-starchless mutant TL25 were evaluated by noninvasive in situ methods for their capacity for net CO2 assimilation, true rates of photosynthetic O2 evolution (determined from chlorophyll fluorescence measurements of photosystem II), partitioning of photosynthate into sucrose and

22. Monensin Inhibition of Na+-Dependent HCO3- Transport Distinguishes It from Na+-Independent HCO3- Transport and Provides Evidence for Na+/HCO3- Symport in the Cyanobacterium Synechococcus UTEX 625.
The effect of monensin, an ionophore that mediates Na+/H+ exchange, on the activity of the inorganic carbon transport systems of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus UTEX 625 was investigated using transport assays based on the measurement of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission or 14C uptake. In Synechococcus cells grown in standing culture at about 20 [mu]M CO2
