1. Sobrevida de longo prazo em carcinoma brônquico após tratamento cirúrgico: sexo é fator prognóstico? / Long time survival rate in lung carcinoma after surgical treatment: is gender a prognostic factor?

2. Identification of rounded atelectasis in workers exposed to asbestos by contrast helical computed tomography
Rounded atelectasis (RA) is a benign and unusual form of subpleural lung collapse that has been described mostly in asbestos-exposed workers. This form of atelectasis manifests as a lung nodule and can be confused with bronchogenic carcinoma upon conventional radiologic examination. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the variation in contrast

3. Results of resection for bronchogenic carcinoma in patients over the age of 80.
Thirty three patients aged over 80 years underwent resection for bronchogenic carcinoma. The operations performed were: lobectomy (21), segmentectomy (4), wedge resection (2), pneumonectomy (3), carinal resection (1). In two patients no resection was feasible. Three patients died within two months of surgery. The cumulative five year survival rate was 55%, 7

4. Post-irradiation surgery for bronchogenic carcinoma
In an attempt to improve both the resectability and survival rates for bronchogenic carcinoma, pre-operative supervoltage radiotherapy was introduced in 1961 and continued for a period of three years. Patients with either a histological or cytological diagnosis were given a tumour dose of 4,500 r over six weeks and then a two-month period elapsed before surg

5. Mediastinoscopy: A clinical evaluation of 400 consecutive cases
Mediastinoscopy was carried out in 400 cases, including 296 of bronchogenic carcinoma. At the time of presentation the new growth had already spread to involve the mediastinal lymph nodes in slightly more than 50% of these. The incidence of involvement was 76% in oat-cell and 35% in squamous-cell carcinoma. Non-resectability at thoracotomy was encountered in

6. Pneumocephalus: an unusual cause
A 60 year old male had an open thoracotomy for bronchogenic carcinoma. On the twelfth hospital day he became obtunded and complained of headache. Radiographs revealed intracranial air. It was thought that the pneumocephalus in this patient was most likely secondary to a tension pneumothorax continuously forcing air through a dural tear sustained at the time

7. Preoperative computed tomography of the brain in non-small cell bronchogenic carcinoma.
BACKGROUND: Computed tomography of the brain is the most accurate diagnostic investigation for detecting intracranial tumours. A prospective study was undertaken to try to maximise the cost effectiveness of computed tomography of the brain in the preoperative evaluation of non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS: All patients with non-small cell lung cancer who

8. Biosynthesis of Vasopressin In Vitro and Ultrastructure of a Bronchogenic Carcinoma: PATIENT WITH THE SYNDROME OF INAPPROPRIATE SECRETION OF ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE
Tumors from patients with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) have been found to contain large amounts of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin. A lung tumor from a patient with hyponatremia most likely due to SIADH was removed at surgery and found to contain 23.5 mU vasopressin/g wet weight by radioimmunoassay Slices of th

9. Constitutive activation of 5-lipoxygenase in the lungs of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disorder characterized by inflammation, fibroblast proliferation, and accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins. Leukotrienes (LTs) are pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic mediators derived from the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. They are thought to play a role in a numbe
