1. FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY IN ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS DURING THE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD

Effects of physiotherapy intervention on the autonomic control of heart rate in acute myocardial infarction patients: phase I of cardiac rehabilitation.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of physiotherapeutic intervention on the autonomic control of heart rate through heart rate variability (HRV) indices at rest (supine and seated positions), during deep breath test (DBT), during an exercise protocol and during walking, in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) submitted to

4. Cardiovascular tests of autonomic function and sympathetic skin responses in patients with major depression.
To assess the function of the autonomic nervous system in major depression, a series of cardiovascular tests, together with the recording of sympathetic skin response, were performed in 18 depressed patients (melancholic type, DSM-III-R criteria) and in 18 healthy control subjects. Depressed patients showed significantly poorer performance in Valsalva's, dee

5. Evidence for cardiovascular autonomic nerve dysfunction in multiple sclerosis.
In 21 patients with multiple sclerosis and 20 healthy controls, the following tests of autonomic function were examined: (1) variation in heart rate during deep breathing, (2) the variations in heart rate and systolic blood pressure during a standardised Valsalva manoeuvre, (3) the changes in heart rate and systolic blood pressure during arm ergometry starti

6. Autonomic neuropathy in systemic lupus erythematosus: cardiovascular autonomic function assessment.
AIM--To assess the prevalence and the nature of autonomic neuropathy (AN) in 17 patients with inactive or mild active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS--Patients were tested using questionnaires related to possible AN symptoms, and four non invasive cardiovascular autonomic function tests at rest, during lying to standing, and sustained handgrip. 7. Postnatal development of the pattern of respiratory and cardiovascular response to systemic hypoxia in the piglet: the roles of adenosine.
1. In 3-day-old and 3-week-old spontaneously breathing piglets anaesthetized with Saffan, we have studied ventilatory and cardiovascular responses evoked by 5 min periods of hypoxia (breathing 10 and 6% O2). 2. In 3-day-old piglets both 10 and 6% O2 evoked an increase followed by a secondary fall in ventilation, a gradual tachycardia and a renal vasoconstric

8. The role of adenosine in the respiratory and cardiovascular response to systemic hypoxia in the rat.
1. In rats anaesthetized with Saffan we have studied the effects of the adenosine receptor antagonists, theophylline and 8-phenyltheophylline, upon the respiratory and cardiovascular responses evoked by 5 min periods of systemic hypoxia. 2. In the group of animals that were to receive theophylline (15 mg kg-1 i.v.), arterial O2 pressure (Pa,O2) fell from 83

9. Influences on the cardiovascular response to graded levels of systemic hypoxia of the accompanying hypocapnia in the rat.
1. In spontaneously breathing, anaesthetized rats, a study was made of the effects upon the graded cardiovascular responses to systemic hypoxia (inspiratory fractional O2 concentration, Fi, O2: 0.15, 0.12, 0.08, 0.06) of maintaining arterial CO2 pressure (Pa,CO2) at the air-breathing level by adding CO2 to the inspirate (eucapnic hypoxia), rather than allowi

10. Lateralization of expression of neural sympathetic activity to the vessels and effects of carotid baroreceptor stimulation
Human studies suggest that cardiovascular neural sympathetic control is predominantly modulated by the right cerebral hemisphere. It is unknown whether post-ganglionic sympathetic activity [muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)] shows any functional asymmetry. Eight right-handed volunteers (3 women and 5 men, 32 ± 2 yr of age) underwent ECG, beat-by-beat

11. Cardiovascular functional disorder and stress among patients having neck-shoulder symptoms.
OBJECTIVES--To investigate if autonomic nervous system function, reflected in cardiovascular variables, among patients with neck-shoulder symptoms (tension neck group (T)) differed from that in a symptom free control group (C), and to establish its relation with pain and psychological stress. METHODS--Twelve women with tension neck and nine controls in secre

12. A study on rats of the effects of chronic hypoxia from birth on respiratory and cardiovascular responses evoked by acute hypoxia.
1. Comparative studies were performed on eighteen rats 54 days old made chronically hypoxic from birth in an hypoxic chamber at 12% O2 (CHB), and in eight weight-matched control rats (NB, 42 days old); both CHB and NB rats were anaesthetized with Saffan. 2. In NB rats, breathing 12 or 8% O2 for 5 min induced a pattern of response comparable to that described
