1. Avaliação microbiana das manchas dentárias extrínsecas negras em pacientes submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico / Bacterial analysis of black tooth stains in patients on orthodontic treatment
Black extrinsic tooth stains appear on the smooth surfaces of teeth, parallel to the marginal gum and are considered a specific form of biofilm due to the high content of calcium, phosphate and insoluble iron salt. This study evaluated the profile of bacterial biofilms in patients with black extrinsic tooth stain with or without fixed metal braces installed.

2. Avaliação microbiana das manchas dentárias extrínsecas negras em pacientes submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico / Bacterial analysis of black tooth stains in patients on orthodontic treatment

3. Estudo do hidrÃxido de cÃlcio associado ou nÃo à clorexidina como medicaÃÃo intracanal de dentes permanentes necrosados / Study of calcium hydroxide associated or not to chlorhexidine as intracanal medication in necrotic teeth
Aware that the main objective of endodontic treatment is the removal of microorganisms and the prevention of re-infection inside the root canal, and that the infections are polymicrobial and difficult to eliminate, the biomechanical preparation is essential for disinfection, though it is unable to eradicate all microorganisms. The intracanal medication is us

4. AvaliaÃÃo do efeito antibacteriano da medicaÃÃo intracanal à base de hidrÃxido de cÃlcio associado ou nÃo à clorexidina 1% no tratamento de dentes necrosados apÃs trauma / Antibacterial effect evaluation of calcium hydroxide with or without chlorhexidine like intracanal medication in the treatment of necrotic teeth after trauma
The goals of this dissertation are study of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine as irrigants, through a literature review, evaluate and quantify, by means of bacterial culture, the antibacterial effect of biomechanical preparation and pulp-based hydroxide calcium with or without 1% chlorhexidine on bacteria in root canals of permanent teeth after necrotic

5. Modulation of colonization by black-pigmented Bacteroides species in squirrel monkeys by immunization with Bacteroides gingivalis.
Periodontal diseases are inflammatory responses thought to be triggered by specific microorganisms colonizing in the gingival crevice. Theoretically, periodontal diseases could be prevented if the etiologic organisms were not allowed to colonize the subgingival area. The humoral immune response is one mechanism which may modulate bacterial colonization in th

6. Rapid presumptive identification of black-pigmented gram-negative anaerobic bacteria by using 4-methylumbelliferone derivatives.
A rapid method for presumptive identification of black-pigmented gram-negative anaerobic rods was developed. Using filter paper spot tests for indole production, sialidase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-fucosidase, and trypsinlike enzyme activities, 100% of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Bacteroides levii and 89% of Prevote

7. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of various antimicrobial agents for human oral anaerobic bacteria.
The minimal inhibitory concentrations of a series of antimicrobial agents for human oral organisms were determined under anaerobic growth conditions by an agar dilution assay. With the exception of black-pigmented Bacteroides spp., minimal inhibitory concentrations for oral isolates were similar to those for non-oral isolates of organisms of the same or clos

8. Enzymatic characterization of some oral and nonoral gram-negative bacteria with the API ZYM system.
The API ZYM system (Analytab Products, Plainview, N.Y.), containing 19 chromogenic substrates, was utilized semiquantitatively to detect extracellular acid and alkaline phosphatases, aminopeptidases, proteases, esterase-lipase, phosphoamidase, and glycosidases in 128 oral and nonoral isolates of black-pigmented Bacteroides, Actinobacillus, Haemophilus aphrop

9. Immunobiological activities of a 55-kilodalton cell surface protein of Prevotella intermedia ATCC 25611.
A protein was extracted from whole cells of Prevotella intermedia ATCC 25611 with sodium lauroylsarcosine and purified by chromatography on a DEAE-Sepharose fast-flow column. The The apparent molecular weight of the protein was 55,000. A mouse polyclonal antibody specific for the protein recognized the cell surface structure of P. intermedia and also reacted

10. Bacteriological study of periodontal lesions in two sisters with juvenile periodontitis and their mother.
A total of five bacteriological samples from the periodontal pockets of two sisters with localized juvenile periodontitis and their mother with advanced periodontitis was studied. Gram-negative anaerobic rods were predominant in the samples. Bacteroides intermedius and Bacteroides loescheii were the most predominant species. The antigenicity and bacteriocino

11. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of Oral Black-Pigmented Bacteria Induce Tumor Necrosis Factor Production by LPS-Refractory C3H/HeJ Macrophages in a Way Different from That of Salmonella LPS
Some lipopolysaccharide (LPS) preparations from S- or R-form members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and oral black-pigmented bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia) are known to activate LPS-refractory C3H/HeJ macrophages. When contaminating proteins are removed from R-form LPS of Enterobacteriaceae by repurification, however, this ab

12. Hemin levels in culture medium of Porphyromonas (Bacteroides) gingivalis regulate both hemin binding and trypsinlike protease production.
Washed cells and Sarkosyl-insoluble outer membrane preparations of the black-pigmented bacteroides Porphyromonas gingivalis W50 bound hemin. The amount of hemin removed from a buffered solution by both cells and outer membranes was significantly larger if bacteria had been grown in broths supplemented with 5 mg of hemin per liter rather than none. Conversely
