13. Cytotoxic activity of phenolic constituents from Echinochloa crus-galli against four human cancer cell lines
Abstract Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Poaceae, grains are used as a feed for birds and millet for humans. The sulforhodamine B assay was used to assess its cytotoxicity against four human cancer cell lines. The ethanolic extract (70%) proved to be most active against HCT-116 and HELA cell lines (IC50 = 11.2 ± 0.11 and 12.0 ± 0.11 µg/ml, respecti

14. Key factors affecting seed germination of Copaifera langsdorffii, a Neotropical tree
In natural conditions biotic and abiotic factors interact, synergistically affecting seed germination. In this study, we experimentally simulated natural conditions that occur during seed dispersal that can affect the germination of Copaifera langsdorffii. Specifically we evaluated the effect of aril removal by different dispersal agents (birds and ants) and

15. Eggshell apex abnormalities in a free-range hen farm with mycoplasma synoviae and infectious bronchitis virus in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil
A farm with 3,000 free-range hens between 24 and 65 weeks of age was investigated. These hens were separated in small flocks of 400 to 700 birds, presenting 10 to 23% egg production reduction. Twenty serum samples were collected during the period of drop in egg production and three weeks later for the investigation of Mycoplasma synoviae (MS), M. galliseptic

16. Levantamento de animais silvestres atropelados em trecho da rodovia BR482
The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of wild animals found run over on the highway BR482 in the stretch between the cities Conselheiro Lafaiete and Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The average of run over was 0.010 animals/km traveled. The mammals represented the most hit, followed by birds, amphibians and reptiles. This work, pioneered i

17. Environmental isolation, biochemical identification, and antifungal drug susceptibility of Cryptococcus species
Introduction The incidence of opportunistic fungal infections has increased in recent years and is considered an important public health problem. Among systemic and opportunistic mycoses, cryptococcosis is distinguished by its clinical importance due to the increased risk of infection in individuals infected by human immunodeficiency virus. Methods To det

18. Commercial preslaughter blue light ambience for controlling broiler stress and meat qualities
The objective of this work was to study the effect of blue light diffuser on the broiler stress control by measuring the occurrence of PSE meat just before slaughtering. Birds were divided into the following two groups before slaughter at the point of being hung on shackles: broiler group under low intensity blue light ambience (475, 17-20 lx) and control gr

20. Estrutura populacional, crescimento somático e alométrico, biologia reprodutiva e estimativa do tamanho populacional de Aegla perobae Hebling &Rodrigues, 1977 do município de São Pedro, estado de São Paulo / Population structure, somatic and allometric growth, reproductive biology and population size estimation of Aegla perobae Hebling &Rodrigues, 1977 in São Pedro, São Paulo state
Aeglids are endemic to the neotropical South America. They are restricted to freshwaters, mainly occurring under rocks and fragmented leaves or buried in the sand (Burns, 1972; Rodrigues &Hebling, 1978; Swiech-Ayoub &Masunari 2001a) in lakes, rivers, streams and even rivers running into caves. The aeglids are important links in the food chain of freshwater e

21. Dinâmica e composição da avifauna do sub-bosque sob influência de diferentes históricos de queimada em uma savana Amazônica / Bird dynamics and composition under different fire regimes in an Amazonian Savanna
Savannas are ecosystems maintained by fires, characterized by a fire-adapted biota. Different fire regimes can generate structurally diverse vegetation, and savanna birds are known to be closely related to vegetation structure. However, long-term approaches and interaction of fire with other environmental factors need to be explored for the better understand

22. Evidence of vertical migration in the Ipanema bat Pygoderma bilabiatum (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae)
Migration is defined as a seasonal and cyclic population movement observed in all animal classes and studied mainly in vertebrates. A considerable part of the knowledge on migration comes from birds, for which migration is an important aspect of their biology. In the case of bats, females usually migrate larger distances than males in some species. The prese

23. Nasal mites (Gamasida: Rhinonyssidae) of Paroaria coronata (Miller) (Passeriformes: Emberezidae)
With the aim of identifying the species of nasal mites of Paroaria coronata (red-crested cardinal), the nasal cavity of 40 birds were examined. The nasal mites were identified as Ptilonyssus sairae de Castro and Sternostoma pirangae Pence, with 50% and 7.5% of prevalence, respectively. This is the first record of these mite species parasitizing P. coronata.

The behaviour of ostrich chicks bred in captivity was studied by using groups with 30 birds in five age groups: from 10 to 40 days of age; from 41 to 60 days of age; from 61 to 90 days of age; from 91 to 120 days of age and from 121 to 150 days of age. Six birds at each age were ringed around one of their feet and observed for four consecutive days for eight
