37. Effect of the administration of continuous positive pressure in aerial ways in not invasive way on the aeration of parÃnquima pulmonary in patients with pulmonary illness obstrutiva chronicle / Efeitos da administraÃÃo de pressÃo positiva contÃnua em vias aÃreas de modo nÃo invasivo sobre a aeraÃÃo do parÃnquima pulmonar em pacientes com doenÃa pulmonar obstrutiva crÃnica

38. Estudo do efeito dos metabólitos do benzeno e tolueno sobre as mitocôndris cerebrais e hepáticas de ratos
Aim: The aim of this work was to investigate the hypothesis that catechol and 3MC inhibit FADH2-linked basal respiration in mitochondria isolated from rat liver and brain homogenates. Moreover, catechol ability to induce DNA damage in rat brain cells through the comet assay (alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis assay) was also observed. Methods: Two diff

39. Atividade e diversidade da biomassa microbiana em diferentes sistemas de manejo do solo e de culturas no norte do Estado do Parana / Activity and diversity of microbial biomass under different soil and crop management systems in the north of the state of Parana (Brazil)
The microbial biomass carbon (MB-C) and nitrogen (MB-N), basal respiration and metabolic quotient (qCO2) were evaluated in a Rhodic Eutrudox of the North Region of the State of Paraná under different soil and crop management systems. The experimental area was established in 1988/1989 at the experimental station of Embrapa Soja, Londrina, Paraná, and consis

40. Degradation of Benzothiophene and Related Compounds by a Soil Pseudomonas in an Oil-Aqueous Environment
Pseudomonas aeruginosa PRG-1, an isolate from oil-contaminated soil, degrades benzothiophene (BT) and other related compounds in a 5% oil-basal medium system. The organism cannot grow on BT alone; 0.05% yeast extract is a suitable substrate for its growth and for its attack on BT. Although BT is partially toxic to the bacteria, toxicity is reduced when BT is

41. Endogenous Dark Respiration of the Blue-Green Alga, Plectonema boryanum
Endogenous dark respiration in the blue-green alga Plectonema boryanum is markedly affected by preincubation in the light: it can be increased from a basal rate of 5 nmoles of O2 to 55 nmoles of O2 per mg of cell protein per min after exposure of the cells to light for 8 to 10 hr. Under conditions of enhanced dark respiration, cyanophage multiplication in th

42. RESPIRATION OF BASIDIOSPORES OF SCHIZOPHYLLUM COMMUNE
Niederpruem, Donald J. (Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis). Respiration of basidiospores of Schizophyllum commune. J. Bacteriol. 88:210–215. 1964.—The aerobic metabolism of basidiospores of the wood-rotting mushroom Schizophyllum commune was investigated by use of manometric techniques and specific respiratory poisons. Basal respiration was

43. Root and Nodule Respiration in Relation to Acetylene Reduction in Intact Nodulated Peas 1
Inoculated pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were grown with N-free nutrients in a controlled environment room and rates of respiratory CO2 evolution and C2H2 reduction by the intact nodulated roots were determined. Experiments followed changes related to diurnal cycles, light and dark treatments, partial defoliation, aging of plants and NH4NO3 addition. In all

44. Respiration and the Energy Requirement for Nitrogen Fixation in Nodulated Pea Roots 1
Pisum sativum L. cv. Trapper plants were inoculated and grown in a controlled environment on N-free nutrient solution. After 4 weeks N was supplied to treatment plants as NH4NO3, KNO3, or NH4Cl and rates of C2H2 reduction, root + nodule respiration, and leaf photosynthesis were determined 1 week later. The increase in respiration per unit of C2H2 reduction w

45. EFFECT OF MANGANESE AND ENZYMATIC DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID DIGESTS ON POPULATION CHANGES AND RESPIRATION OF PNEUMOCOCCI
Firshein, William (Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn.). Effect of manganese and enzymatic deoxyribonucleic acid digests on population changes and respiration of pneumococci. J. Bacteriol. 84:478–484. 1962.—Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA; Na salt) treated with deoxyribonuclease and Mn++ (as MnSO4) stimulated R (avirulent) to S (virulent) population change

46. Chemosensory and cholinergic stimulation of fictive respiration in isolated CNS of neonatal opossum.
1. The aim of the present experiments was to characterize the central chemical drive of fictive respiration in the isolated CNS of the newborn opossum, Monodelphis domestica. This opossum preparation, in contrast to those of neonatal rats and mice, produces respiratory rhythm of high frequency in vitro. 2. Fictive respiration was recorded from C3-C5 ventral

47. Cyanide-Resistant Respiration in Photosynthetic Organs of Freshwater Aquatic Plants
The rate and sensitivity to inhibitors (KCN and salicylhydroxamic acid[SHAM]) of respiratory oxygen uptake has been investigated in photosynthetic organs of several freshwater aquatic plant species: six angiosperms, two bryophytes, and an alga. The oxygen uptake rates on a dry weight basis of angiosperm leaves were generally higher than those of the correspo

48. Influence of Oxygen on Development of Nitrate Respiration in Bacillus stearothermophilus
A denitrifying mutant of Bacillus stearothermophilus NCA 2184, strain 2184-D, was used to explore the development of nitrate respiration in relation to oxygen respiration. Aerobically grown wild-type cultures could acquire the ability to use nitrate as a result of selection of nitrate-respiring mutants by the presence of nitrate and a reduced oxygen tension.
