13. Selected list of books and journals for the small medical library.
This revised list of 492 books and 138 journals is intended as a selection guide for small or medium-sized hospital libraries or for the small medical library serving a specified clientele. It can also be used as a core list by small hospital library consortia. Books and journals are categorized by subject, with the books being followed by an author index an

14. The Glycosyltransferase Domain of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2a from Streptococcus pneumoniae Catalyzes the Polymerization of Murein Glycan Chains
The bacterial peptidoglycan consists of glycan chains of repeating β-1,4-linked N-acetylglucosaminyl-N-acetylmuramyl units cross-linked through short peptide chains. The polymerization of the glycans, or glycosyltransfer (GT), and transpeptidation (TP) are catalyzed by bifunctional penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). The β-lactam antibiotics inhibit the TP

15. Compilation of tRNA sequences.
This compilation presents in a small space the tRNA sequences so far published. The numbering of tRNAPhe from yeast is used following the rules proposed by the participants of the Cold Spring Harbor Meeting on tRNA 1978 (1,2;Fig. 1). This numbering allows comparisons with the three dimensional structure of tRNAPhe. The secondary structure of tRNAs is indicat

16. Chemical and immunological characterizations of equine infectious anemia virus gag-encoded proteins.
The viral core proteins (p15, p26, p11, and p9) of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) (Wyoming strain) were purified by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Each purified protein was analyzed for amino acid content, N-terminal amino acid sequence, C-terminal amino acid sequence, and phosphoamino acid content. The results of N- and C-terminal

17. A Conserved Capsid Protein Surface Domain of Cucumber Mosaic Virus Is Essential for Efficient Aphid Vector Transmission
A prominent feature on the surfaces of virions of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a negatively charged loop structure (the βH-βI loop). Six of 8 amino acids in this capsid protein loop are highly conserved among strains of CMV and other cucumoviruses. Five of these amino acids were individually changed to alanine or lysine (an amino acid of opposite charge)

18. Photooxidation of d(TpG) by phthalocyanines and riboflavin. Isolation and characterization of dinucleoside monophosphates containing the 4R* and 4S* diastereoisomers of 4,8-dihydro-4-hydroxy-8-oxo-2'-deoxy-guanosine.
Phthalocyanine mediated photosensitization of 2'-deoxyguanosine (dG) in oxygen saturated aqueous solution has previously been shown to result in the addition of molecular oxygen to the guanine base generating the 4R* and 4S* diastereoisomers of 4,8-dihydro-4-hydroxy-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (dO) (the asterisk denotes unambiguous assignment of the 4R and 4S di

19. Compilation of tRNA sequences.
This compilation presents in a small space the tRNA sequences so far published in order to enable rapid orientation and comparison. The numbering of tRNAPhe from yeast is used as has been done earlier (1) but following the rules proposed by the participants of the Cold Spring Harbor Meeting on tRNA 1978 (2) (Fig. 1). This numbering allows comparisons with th

20. Characterization of Escherichia coli men Mutants Defective in Conversion of o-Succinylbenzoate to 1,4-Dihydroxy-2-Naphthoate
Four independent menaquinone (vitamin K2)-deficient mutants of Escherichia coli, blocked in the conversion of o-succinylbenzoate (OSB) to 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate (DHNA), were found to represent two distinct classes. Enzymatic complementation was observed when a cell-free extract of one mutant was mixed with extracts of any of the remaining three mutants.

21. Polyprotein processing in cis and in trans by hepatitis A virus 3C protease cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli.
To determine the P3 region protein-processing sites cleaved by the hepatitis A virus 3C protease, a nested set of constructs containing a portion of 3A (3A* [the asterisk denotes an incomplete protein]), 3B and 3C and various amounts of 3D, fused in frame to Escherichia coli TrpE-coding sequences under control of the tryptophan promoter, was made.
