RESUMO

This study presents a recent history of the Halotesu, Sawentesu, Wakalitesu, KithÃulhu, Niyahlosu, Siwaihsu and Hinkatesu, groups that belong to the Indian people Nambiquara, settled in the Indian Land Nambikwara, in Chapada dos Parecis-MT, an integrant part of the Legal Amazon. Its geographic territory, configured in 1973 by the BR-364, the JuÃna- Juruena and Doze de Outubro-Camararà Rivers, is characterized by lines of demarcation in movement which change because of temporary interests both of the Indians and the agents of contact. The agents of contact who got to the Nambiquara lands and in its limits are analyzed here as individuals that are part of the plots of relationships that are established among them and as elements that interact with the Indians and exert influence in their sociocultural order. The contact, however, is not noticed as a disintegrating result of the Nambiquara society, but as factors that intersect to their history. The Indians are led to the interdependence and, consequently, to the constant inadaptation that search for a condition of relative balance, establishing a social coexistence. In this dimension, the shamanâs speech, wanintesu, delivers meanings to the cultural practices that give sense, elaborate and organize the existence of his group. This speech, understood as a complex arrangement of practices and symbols, presents determinative parts of the Indianâs view of the world. In this approach, the main documental bases are the oral sources that come from the interviews carried out with the Indians that inhabit the Nambikwara Indian land
