Violência na escola desafiando a promoção de um ambiente saudável

RESUMO

Concept of violence is complex. This phenomenon has expanded its forms and scope of occurrence. For a long time now, school has become the stage for violent sceneries and behaviors, bringing concerns to all those involved in both teaching and learning process. Because it seems important to contribute for the construction of this field of knowledge, the general objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of violence in public schools in the municipality of Fortaleza, Ceará. Its specific objectives is investigating the views of Secondary and Middle School teachers of a Public State School of school violence and describe the situations of violence at school by understanding the Secondary and Middle school students and the prevalence of weapons and drugs in their possession in the school environment. The study adopted the both qualitative and quantitative approaches comprising 26 teachers and 935 students of Secondary and Middle School of a public state school in Fortaleza, Ceará, in 2006. By holding workshops, completing an observation form and making a categorical analysis, the teachers view of violence at school was investigated. A structured, self-applied questionnaire was used by students to investigate whether that had watched violence, weapons and drugs at school, and the respective data were analyzed by SPSS, release 13.0. The study was approved and registered in Coética-Unifor under number 06-058. Results show that teacher view violence at school as aggressiveness and misbehavior, according to the existing literature on the topic. Out of those 935 students, 41,9% of them had witnessed violence at school; 44,3% feel that school is a violent and environment; 40,1% declared that they had been victim of bullying at school, where nicknames were mentioned by 48,5% of them as the main form of aggression. Questioned about weapons and drugs, 38,4% and 32,7% respectively answered that hey had seen them. It is assumed that both teachers and students have an understanding of violence and that this phenomenon is present in the school environment; in this context, weapons and drug are risk factors that accentuate the problem. Thereby way, this conflicting, frightening reality is a major challenge to the implantation and consolidation of healthy school environment.
