RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the effect of resisted exercise bench press on intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: Sixty eyes of 30 normal, male subjects were enrolled. Subjects performed four repetitions of bench press exercise in two different ways: in mode I, breathing was held in the last repetition, and in mode II, subjects exhaled normally in the last repetition. An electronic tonometer (Ton-pen XL) was used for IOP measurements. The right eye was used for testing in mode I and the left eye for testing in mode II. IOP was measured during the fourth repetition in both modes while the subject sustained the exercise. RESULTS: mean IOP during exercise in mode I increased by 4.3 (SD 4.2) mmHg (p<0.001, ANOVA test; range -3.6 to +17.7 mmHg). In mode II, mean IOP increased by 2.2 (SD 3.0) mmHg (p<0.001, paired t test; range -6.0 to + 8.7 mmHg). IOP increased in 90% of eyes submitted to mode I, and in 60% of eyes in mode II. An increase on IOP >5.0 was observed in 9 eyes (30%) in mode I, and in six eyes (21%) in mode II. IOP in two eyes from subjects who performed exercise mode I was markedly increased (>10.0 mmHg). CONCLUSION: IOP increases significantly during weight lifting in a bench press exercise. Holding the breath during the exercise leads to a further increase on IOP. The results are clinically significant.
