RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate the Participation Motivation Questionnaire PMQ (Gill et al., 1983) validity and reliability after its adaptation to verify Brazilian young adult athletes participation motivation in sports. It followed Beaton et al.s (2002) recommendations for cross-cultural instruments adaptations. An experts commission was responsible for the content validity. It was added 3 health-related questions to the original 30 PMQ items, and the original 3 points Likert scale was replaced by an 11 points interval scale (from 0 to 10). After collecting data among 132 intercollegiate athletes (64 men and 68 women) between 18 and 25 years old (mean 21,86 + 2,13), distributed among 6 collective sports and 5 individual sports, the researchers employed factor analysis with Varimax rotation, finding seven motivational dimensions. Their internal consistency coefficients (Cronbachs a) were also calculated: status (0,88), fitness (0,78), energy release (0,76), context (0,74), skills development (0,78), affiliation (0,86) and health (0,86). With the exception of the fitness dimension internal consistency coefficient, all were superior to Gill et al.s (1983) original PMQ research results. The mean intraclass correlation coefficient was 0,81, testifying the Brazilian questionnaire stability. It is possible to believe that, after the present results, the instruments validity and reliability were testified and the Escala de Motivos para a Prática Esportiva (EMPE) is ready for utilization in academic and sportive contexts.
