RESUMO

The Brazilian forestry sector plays an important role in the economy of the country and its industries need to achieve excellence in product quality to win the consumer market. The development of new technologies and the improvement of techniques already known is the most efficient way to improve the quality of products manufactured by the forest industry and therefore a rational way of using the potential of timber available in Brazil. It is increasing the need for new technologies related to the characterization of wood, currently determined by destructive testing. The use of alternative non-destructive technology has been effective in characterizing and assessing the quality of wood. This study aims the use of non-destructive techniques: image analysis, colorimetry, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), ultra-sound to characterize Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis woods. The research was developed at the University of Brasilia (UnB), together with to Forest Products Laboratory - LPF / SFB, and the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP - São Paulo). The results obtained in this study using the techniques of image analysis, the colorimetry of near infrared waves and ultrassonoras to the woods of pine and eucalyptus can be considered alternatives to the characterization of these woods. The property best estimated by all the techniques was the density, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR). The analysis of the image density allows the separation of the wood density, and provides more accurate values for Pinus and Eucalyptus, with coefficients determination of 0.96 and 0.59, respectively. Colorimetric analysis in the radial surface was better correlated to the properties measured, with emphasis on density and MOR. In the analysis of ultrasound it was not possible to separate the wood and the better estimated properties were the density and MOE. In the analysis by NIRS, it was observed that it can be used on any surface (tangential or radial), although the face that best represents the results in the tangential. The density, the MOE and MOR were properties that had more significant results for this study. The techniques used permitted to conclude that the species can be separated into groups of conifers and hardwoods, the distinctive characteristics and its physical and mechanical properties can be predicted with the use of these techniques.
