RESUMO

The objective of this work is to show to what point the utilization of teaching material (concret or audiovisual) would make effective the teaching-learning process of Mathematics in the primary schools of Teresina which belong to the public school system, taking as a base the latest results in the 4th grade of the primary school. The experience was carried out in two schools of the North Zone School Complex located in the northern zone of Teresina, including six classes of the 4th grade of the primary school, three classes being from the 7th, and 3 from the 8th period, including two teachers, one with 89 students of the 7° period and the other with 81 students of the 8th periodo, considered as experimental groups. To compare the final achievement results as the end of t h e semester, six classes were taken from the 4th grade, including 7th and 8th periods, including two teachers, one from each period with 99 students in the 7th and 99 students in the 8th . After the analysis of the experiment, the following results were obtained: - experimental group - 91,7% of achievement at a passing level; - control group - 75,7% of achievement at a passing level; One can thus observe that the experimental group obtained 16% more in achievement level than the control group. Even though it was not the object of this experiment indices of drop-outs were observed in the two groups which showed a drop-out of 4,1% in the experimental group and l4,6% of the control groups thus proving the efficiency of teaching material in the educative process. Given the results presented by this work, one may conclude that there is a greater efficiency in the teaching-learning process, awakening a greater interest in the student for the learning of Mathematics and a greater participation in the achievement of the activities developed in the classroom
