RESUMO

The aim this paper is to show a literature review about the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), calling attention to its structure, mechanism of action, kinds of carriers and it importancy on bone neoformation. The bone morphogenetic protein makes part of the superfamily: Transforming Growth Factors (TGF-b). In 1965, the BMP was identified by Marshal Urist, who showed that this protein extracted from bone narrow could induce a bone neoformation when implanted in sites without bone. Recently, a lot of studies have been looking for a better bone regeneration by the use of BMPs alone in substitution of bone grafts. It s concluded that the bone morphogenetic protein is alble to induce a bone neoformation by an efficient way, being an alternative as a substitute to bone grafts in Implantology
