RESUMO

The steady increase in use of tension structures for all sorts of applications, not always with the appropriate concern about local climate aspects, motivated the present study, which evaluates the adequacy of this type of covering to the Amazon Region. More specifically, the object of this study is the tension structures of the Ver-O-Peso free market, located in Belém-PA. In this work, the performance evaluation of the tensile roofs used in this fair was based on the concepts of Bioclimate Architecture, emphasizing their performance as protection to weather exposure. The employed methodology verified the adequacy of the design of these tension structures to the regions climate, using the following programa: Analyses Bio 3.0, SOL-AR 5.0.1, and Tensil 2.1. The results obtained with these computer programs allowed a critical analysis of the design of the Ver-O-Peso market tension structures, concerning their orientation with regard to predominant wind directions and incidence of solar rays, as well as regarding their thermal and luminous performance. In order to precisely study solar incidence on these tensile structures according to the sun position, a virtual model of the fair was created with the program 3DS MAX 8. Then, some computational simulations were performed considering the geographic coordinates of Belém, and the respective sun trajectory occurring during the summer solstice, winter solstice, and equinox. In addition to the analyses performed with these computer programs, a field research, based on several interview questions, was conducted to evaluate the satisfaction of the users (vendors and clients) of the fair. The obtained results demonstrated that it is necessary to improve protection conditions under these tensile structures, especially for the stands located at the border of the covered area. For this purpose, it is suggested that a vertical baffle made with a translucent membrane could be used. This baffle, if strategically placed on the most critical regions of the covering would allow light entrance, but at the same time, reducing the effects of direct ix radiation. Besides, it would also provide a better protection against rain, without changes in the aesthetics of the original design.
