RESUMO

The aim of this work was the development of safety procedures for the application of oily waste in unpaved road maintenance. This waste is generated in the operations of oil exploration and production. The work also aimed to develop equations for calculations of the total cost involved in this application, enabling a cost comparison with other discarding alternatives, as for example, like landfarming treatment. The methodology was based on a review of Brazilian and international literature, observed data and visits to roads where the oily waste was applied. Case studies with simulated scenarios were considered in order to compare the cost of oily waste treatment in landfarming and its application in road maintenance. The proposed equations can be broadly used for various distances, oil contents and operational rates. These equations, introduced into Excel spreadsheets, are a useful tool in simulating scenarios for taking decisions concerning the destination of waste. For waste travel distances larger than 15 km, the difference between the cost of discarding the oily waste on unpaved roads and its treatment in landfarming begins to reduce. Much of the cost of road maintenance with oily waste would be covered anyway by the cost of regular road maintenance.
