RESUMO

This dissertation deals with aspects of popular culture and northeast crafts, as far as the influence they exerted on the visual arts and industrial design in Brazil on the XIX and XX century. The studies were concentrated on Lina Bo Bards action, after hers moving from Sao Paulo to Salvador, which had as main objective, to develop a closer job of the popular local production. This job would be accomplished through the assembly of the Museu de Arte Popular and of Escola de Desenho Industrial e Artesanato in the architectural complex of the Solar Unhão. The dissertation aims to bring out, general events the cultural movement created in Salvador in the second half of the twentieth century that has been forgotten by researchers at the time to assemble the history of design by Brazil. In addition to the appearance of Lina, studies also show aspects of craft production and Bahia mixed by the popular stories of characters from the national scene, such as: Prof. Edgard Santos, Juracy Magalhães, Lavínia Magalhães, Assis Chateaubriand, Odorico Tavares, Celso Furtado and Mario Cravo Jr. Among the specific objectives are: To identify visual signs influence and productive processes of popular culture and craft in the northeastern industrial design; search and disseminate the school of industrial design model, suggested by Lina Bo Bardi, and show the strategic importance of an emancipatory historical study on the design for the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia, where the course of Design; to help School of Fine Arts teachers qualification, as well as to influence researchers from other units of education; demystify the idea that the creative process and production of the more humble of popular culture have somewhat "smaller" or "lowest" value, and disseminate stories of the artisans conditions and low cost manufacturing , and the creation of agencies supporting the development of the Northeast. As methodology for the research development, we used different methods of approach, but the analysis and synthesis was the main point, present in all stages of the project. The historical and comparative methods also helped to complement the job. As an accomplished conclusion of the research analysis, one of the most significant result, was to identify the trajectory of Lina through the Northeast generated huge changes in the local scene, however, due to political interests of Salvador and the military coup of 1964, the project did not take off and keeps only doomed as a historical record.
