RESUMO

This thesis - rooted in French Semiotics theory and the studies on the discursive ethos - will study some of the canonical gospels speeches to demonstrate that the image of Christ throughout the centuries has been built into facets by the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Christian Church from the beginnings believes that Matthew had written to the Jews; Mark, to the Romans; Luke, to the Greeks; and John, to the Christian community in general. Whereas enunciator and enunciatee are subjects of enunciation, it can be said that each evangelist emphasized a particular aspect of Christ, in view of the enunciatee it was directed. Thus, this multi-faceted image of Jesus will be deconstructed so that we can examine how each enunciatee of the gospels discursively built Christs image and ethos. By analyzing the discursive strategies employed by the evangelists to make believe that their speech is true, it will be possible to figure out characteristics of each enunciator and of their respective enunciatees. Then of all the speeches attributed to Christ by means of internal disengagement it will be possible to define Jesuss traits placed in each of the four gospels.
