RESUMO

This dissertation is about the Nove, festive gatherings that congregate men, women, children, young and old people, around collective dances known as brincadeiras de viola. They take place at night and, besides singing and dancing, involve food and drink. I present here an ethnography of three such Noves I took part during fieldwork in the town of Machado and its vicinities in the state of Minas Gerais. I append to the description digressions on different points and themes as they emerge from the description, in an attempt to discern and understand the categories employed by the participants themselves when they talk about social relationships or musical and æstetic aspects of the brinquedo. From an approach to the Nove as a ritual that catalyses specific social configurations, the dissertation moves to a discussion that relates witchcraft to some challenges to the concept of society.
