RESUMO

Through a discrete choice model, this paper seeks to identify and analyze the impact of individual characteristics of Brazilians over the divorce rate, making use of the micro data from the IBGE 1991 Population Census. The regressions results using the probit model, are analyzed in light of the called theory of marriage and theory of divorce, especially following the studies from Becker (1973) and Becker, Landes and Michel (1977). The forecast of the Brazilians individual characteristics impact over divorce rate confirm the rational of the economic theory which assumes that agents maximize their utility in several situations. The results indicate that: i) the probability of divorce decreases as the age at marriage increases, ii) the different races have unequal likelihood of divorce due to different cultural and social conditions, ii) individuals who do not have any kind of religion have a higher probability of divorce; iii) the higher the education of the individual more likely to divorce, iv) individuals who reside in rural areas are less likely to divorce and, finally, the children appear as a specific capital, reducing the likelihood of divorce for women
