RESUMO

The objective of this work is to investigate how the media portrayed the multi-aspects of Michael Jacksons body: the transformed and performing body, the mediatic and dead body. For this study, we researched the multiple representations the artists body presented during his life and career. Among the approaches, the influences brought about by the post-modern period to the artists body were highlighted: a) constant search for transformations, operated by the technological and scientific facilities of post-modernity, which led him to a militant narcissism; b) the appeal to construct new identities, demonstrating the volatility of change; c) utilization of the body as subject and object of his work, as the artist resorted to all technological apparatuses to impose his ideas and transmit his messages; d) the influence of the artists clothing, which set trends in world fashion; and e) the use of the body representation, created by the freedom of the discourse, in which he portrayed audacity and sensuality. We also analyzed the power strategies used by Michael Jackson. The artist knew how to utilize the new technologies and add value to his career and to all products associated to it. This helped him to achieve great power and influence the behavior of thousands of people. Lastly, we analyzed the media coverage after the artists death. We verified the media spectacularization of the singers life stories, career, and death. The study shows that the media discourse contributed to build a great idol (the King of Pop), but later the same media deconstructed the artist, who was portrayed as a transgressor (a man who transformed himself and became a symbol of eccentricity). Finally, after his death the media tried to reconstruct everything it had destroyed during the last years of his career.
