RESUMO

How to establish a relationship between cultural elements, political circumnstances and the use of urban space? Is there a way to verify the relationship between culture, society and social behavior? Is it possible to read, in the city tissue, marks of its production processes and agents? The confrontation of everyday practices of different social groups puts in evidence the influence of cultural elements in the production of the metropolis. In the process of choosing, in Recife, the sector of Boa Vista, and using the urban spaces of the city â which was mapped based on interviews of immigrants and their first and second generation descendents â the collective appropriation of different public spaces seems to respond to the political and social changes that marked the 25-year period between world wars I and II and, still, keep the cultural framework of Judaism. At the beginning, settled down around their cultural institutions â language, religion and the sense of social responsibility peculiar to Judaism â the immigrants were building, in Recife, the foreign city. They kept reproducing the urban relations and nets common to them in their former town. When, once socially included, the immigrants followed the middle class in the occupation of other sectors of the city, the place â Boa Vista â becomes the subject, the protagonist of the history, part of their personal experience. The essence of the city lays on diversity, on the acquaintance of differences. Jewish presence had, in Recife, the site of Boa Vista, its attributes and its material shape as physical support for the relationship between local and immigrant societies. Jewish absence gives a new meaning to it. Other groups will take the place â that will acquire new marks â and will tell a new story. The overlay of times and social agents, of different memories andmeanings, makes the history and the places. There is a new city at each point of view. There are several ways to tell the history of Recife â this one is being told by the Jewish immigrants
