RESUMO

This work studies the efficiency and applicability of a sampling technique known as Quincunx to grayscale images. When applied to a discrete image, the Quincunx mosaic halves the number of pixels necessary to represent the visual data without noticeable degradation. The sampling is called Sub-Nyquist because it requires reduction of the bidimensional signal baseband in the Fourier domain. Due to statistical properties of a vast uni verse of real images, this baseband reduction does not corrupt the core of the image representation in the Fourier domain. The viability and advantages of using this sampling technique in conjunction with well established image coding procedures such as Wavelet coding are also studied.
