RESUMO

The West of Paraná, last region of the state to be colonized, is characterized by its linguistic polymorphism. The settlements movements in the region, made by the settlers from the south of Brazil in the decade of 1960, and by the farmers, workers and service providers from different regions of Paraná and Brazil, from the decade of 1970 onwards, culminated in the transfer, exchange and adoption of cultural, linguistic and economic elements from the different groups established in the lands of the West of Paraná. The multicultural scenario motivated this research, which, based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Dialectology and Geolinguistics, aims at describing the Brazilian Portuguese language spoken in the region, identifying the formation of areas characterized both by homogeneity, maintaining the features of the speech of the first residents groups of origin, and by heterogeneity, resulting from the coexistence of different groups. The investigation was designed as an attempt of examining the course of the history of the dialects and languages in the region, which is closely linked to the very history of the locations. This research focus on the speech of informants living in rural areas, considered as a geographical area where speakers from the periods of settlement of the communities still live. This supports the designing of a framework of the speech by the description and analysis of the variables involved in the processes of conservation, innovation, transition, diffusion and irradiation of linguistic forms. For the description of the speech in its moving and complex context, the methodological principles of Pluridimensional Dialectology were considered for the informant selection procedures and the data mapping. In addition to the diatopic, or spatial dimension, the socio-cultural dimension was taken into account, and was extended in the diasexual, diagenerational and diastratic dimensions. This methodological procedure enabled the representation, in the linguistic maps, of the movement of the linguistic variants through the space of the West of Paraná, in the nine survey locations, and within the social variables.
