RESUMO

The present work consists of an investigation of the phenomenon of woman s submission to situations of domestic violence. The research utilized the clientele of "SOS/Ação-Mulher", a feminist entity devoted to fighting the violence against women. For the purpose of this study, it has been considered as violence any physical or psychological aggression instigated by the tim s partner or husband (that is, someone with whom the vicvictim had sexual or affective bonds), resulting in a situation of impotence, being that the victim was unable to alter the situation she was in, thus resulting in a long intimacy with the problem. The researcher s center of interest is to understand the unconscious psychological dynamics - more specifically, the affective-emotional obstacles that maintain these women in situations of violence. For this reason, the basis of reference the psycho-analytical theory, being its major contribution was to this work its theory of instincts, for the subject of violence consists of an explicit display of instinctive discharge, and the submission to this was understood by the researcher as a projection of the death instinct. The study of case histories was the strategy which made it possible to carry out and investigate the above specifications. Seven case histories were selected and the subjects were submitted to interviews and graphic projective tests, which were adapted in accordance with the procedure of picture-stories. The subject was asked to draw four pictures: one human figure, the two persons test, a domestic scene, and a free drawing. The results obtained showed the combined action of both life and death instincts on the lives of these women; their state of inner insecurity and generalized deprivation; their condition of psychological immaturity and dependence upon their partners; the deterministic role of the experiences of and rejection suffered when they were very young; the abandonment existence of ill will within the matrimonial relationship; the censorship of pleasure and of their own sexuality and, furthermore, the highly masochistic nature under which they experience their affective and sexual life. These are the most significant aspects found in the psychic functioning of these women, and they are so deep-rooted that they reflect primitive traces, an indelible inheritance of the ml lenary curse hanging upon woman, and which have almost irremediably buried her glorious past. They are clues presenting themselves for future studies
