RESUMO

The quality of life for people around the world has a direct relationship with the ambient air quality, resource essential to life. Population growth in urban centers has contributed profoundly to the increased emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, mainly by burning fossil fuels and other actions of anthropogenic nature. Cities like Tokyo, Beijing, New York, Mexico City and Sao Paulo are among those with higher levels of air pollution in the world. The effect of air pollution is reflected notably in the degradation of the environment and materials on climate change and reduction in quality of life of populations. In this context, air pollution becomes a major problem of humanity and broad topic of scientific research. In this study, we analyzed concentrations of pollutants Total Suspended Particles - TSP, Sulfur Dioxide - SO2 and black smoke - FP, measures the period between 1993 and 2001, in Fortaleza. The results indicate an air quality INADEQUATE/REGULAR to PTS, REGULAR/GOOD for SO2 and INADEQUATE/REGULAR to Black Smoke, in accordance with the standards established by CONAMA Resolution 03/90. During 2009, were measured for concentrations of fine particulate material to fashion - MP2, 5, Carbon Monoxide - CO, Carbon Dioxide - CO2 and Carbon Black. All results were within the standards established by the Legislature. The results of this study aimed to characterize the present moment and predict the future, the state of atmospheric air, and alert the responsible public agencies, the huge vacuum existing in the period between 2002 and 2010, without such information, and suggest actions that can continue this and other studies and contribute to the sustainable conservation of the environment, materials and quality of atmospheric air.
