RESUMO

The installed capacity of wind power in Brazil should be around 1.4 GW in 2008 being practically divided into two regions of the country (South and Northeast). The predicted installations to the Northeast Region are almost 800 MW. In this situation with several wind turbines connected to the grid in a few years time, the concerns for impacts on the power system stability and quality of supply are growing. Therefore, several types of tools and studies are performed to increase the wind power and improve at the same time improving the power quality and stability of system. In this work, studies of the integration of wind power on steady state operation and on the phase of planning the power system are focused. These studies assess possible troubles concerning power flows in the transmission lines and problems of voltage control. A computational tool was developed for the simulations of the power system with wind farms. This tool represents the wind farms in stead state as well as the power system. A supervisory control system for the wind farm is also modeled and applied in the simulations in order to verify the possible benefits of it. This supervisory control monitors the grid conditions and controls the wind farm in order to keep the power system operation within pre defined limits of voltage and power flow, hence the supervisory controller allows an increase of wind power installation and reduce the impacts on the voltage quality and avoiding overload in transmission lines. The results show the effects of the supervisory control in allowing an increase in the wind power local participation and also an improvement in the voltage levels. This study concludes that the addition of a supervisory controller for the wind farms can be used to allow larger wind power integration. Additionally, the used methodology taking into account probabilistic methods to analyze the wind power integration is seen as one option to postpone some investments for grid reinforcement
