RESUMO

The globalization of the economy in the last two decades has increased the competitivity amongst companies and renewed interest in the issues of increasing productivity through technologic innovations. New ways of production and communication were proposed making companies to adopt new production systems. However, the operation of these systems represents a big challenge for professionals in engineering, computer science, mathematics and management. Modelling, control and performance analyses of these systems is one aspect of this challenge. Petri nets is a formal model suitable for the representation of production systems because it can capture various aspects of these system such as concurrency parallelism and synchronization. There are Petri net based tools for modelling production systems. However, these tools are either of general purpose, being adapted to model production systems, or model only one of its aspects, that is, the manufacturing. In this work Petri nets are used for modelling and analysis of production systems. This modell covers the product structure, productions resources and workplan. A modelling tool based on this technology was developed. The PMSTool is a tool that provides an environment for modelling production system without the need of Petri net knowledge, hence being a differential to other similar tools. PMSTool uses icons to represent the production system elements (e.g., machines, buffers, etc.) and its main characteristics (available resources, buffer size, time to fail, time to repair, etc.). These icons are mapped automatically onto Petri nets
