RESUMO
This work, characterized as a case study, seeks to develop an approach to study the sustainability of rural tourism in a cooperative located in the municipality of Penedo-Alagoas. But what is rural tourism? What are the goals of this touristic modality? How to ensure their "lifetime" in order to achieve its goals within that cooperative? These questions have begun the exploratory phase of this research, which, in addition to the results of the first field recognitions, the theoretical contributions on rural tourism, the Program for Cooperative Rural Tourism, and the studies on sustainability within the organisations, led to the start question: How to develop an approach for sustainable cooperative rural tourism in Penedo - AL? To answer that question, it has been used a combination of techniques for collecting data (comments, interview with structured and semi-structured questionnaires, as well as focus group), directed to two different sample groups: partners and implementers, and a group formed by 18 cooperative members engaged in rural tourism. The methodological path chosen led to the construction of an analytical model of sustainability, in which the considered dimensions (environmental, socio-cultural, economic, technical, cognitive, and political) are related to the objectives of the touristic modality. It addition to that, during the construction of this model, it has been used the approaches of science of life, which strengthened the choices of these dimensions, and contributed one of the findings of this study: that it is necessary to make present the understanding of the functioning of the ecosystems in all dimensions.
