TURISMO E PATRIMÔNIO CULTURAL: Um casarão e seus encantos

RESUMO

The aim of this investigation was to organize and describe the history of the Palacete Paysandu in the city of Pelotas/RS using, as a reference paradigm, studies and reflections on the preservation and restoration of the material and immaterial heritage. A study of this type in a Master‟s degree in Tourism and Hotel Management was justified by the goals of qualifying the Palacete Paysandu as an educational tourism destination, and showing its material and immaterial representativeness as a symbol of great historical/architectural value, particularly due to one of its most notable owners, the writer, João Simões Lopes Neto. In terms of methodology, a qualitative approach was used in the development of this study, with the collection of exploratory data of a documentary and bibliographical nature. Semi-structured interviews were also carried out with teachers, family members of the writer João Simões Lopes Neto, and representatives of the public authorities of the city of Pelotas. The results of this study, presented in descriptive form, led us to a history of the occupation of southern Brazil during the colonial period, and more specifically, the significance of this occupation for the town of Pelotas which, through the dried beef industry, achieved notable cultural economic development in the 19th century, leading its population to intense progress that has been immortalized in the present day, through its constructions/buildings. The study also demonstrates that after this period of progress had passed, much of the history of the built material heritage was forgotten and/or despised by the population, and consequently, by the public authorities. Considering this context, the features of the Historical Material Heritage of Pelotas are discussed, represented here by the Palacete Paysandu, which could [like other heritage] form part of a proposal for Cultural Tourism, justified by the need to preserve the Brazilian heritage for the cultural development of communities and at the same time, promote this tourism segment, which relies on the material and immaterial cultural heritage, supported by History and the intervention of preservationist bodies, like the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Institute for National Historical and Artistic Heritage) IPHAN
