RESUMO

This dissertation aims at showing the changes that happened in Florianópolis and in its urban imaginary through the changes of meaning and function of an old mansion during three distinct periods of the citys history. The first period was in the end of the XIX century, when there was the transition between the monarchy and the republic. During this period the city was called Desterro, and the events that happened there got mixed up with the stories of the house owners, who belonged to the political and social local aristocracy. The second period happened during the II World War, corresponding to the 30s and 40s of the 20th century. During this period the mansion was inhabited by a German baron. Because of the difficulty the local people had to pronounce his name, they started to call the mansion Barons House. Also during this period, the state of Santa Catarina and its population of German immigrants and their descendants suffered several economic, social and cultural restrictions, which also reflected in the house. The last period was in the end of the 20th century and the starting of the 21st century when the house is considered as the Countys historic patrimony and it also became part of the architectural group of buildings, which received the name of Barons House Executive Centre. At that moment the city went through an accelerated process of urban transformation, which culminated with the new meaning and use of the mansion.
