RESUMO

Considering that in is much as worldwide, military institutions have been the subject of epidemiologic studies: an investigation of such has been done in our community, utilizing the Brazilian Anny s Physical Training Program, focusing on the areas of exercise, fitness and health. This Military Fitness Program is detailed in a training manual, and our objective consisted of reviewing and observing exactly how this system functions in relation to improvement in fitness and health. The following procedures were planned: i) a comparative analysis of the Anny Training Manual with similar non-military training programs: ii) a direct observation in a specific area of study on the physical aptitude tests given during the 12th and 24th weeks of the Military Training Program. This was proceeded by a rectro-analysis study, where data were appropriated from one group of soldiers (40 shooters") of a military training unit, #02-40 in Sorocaba, São Paulo, with reference to the year 1991. Five physical aptitude tests were employed: burpee test, pull-ups, push-ups, situps, and the 12 minute run. These tests were treated statistically in both a descriptive and analitical sense: as to the former, it was characterized by the obtained distributions by measurement of position and variability: and the latter, the non-parametric Wilcoxon test was adopted at tbe 5% level of statistical significance. Observed results that stood out were: 1) statistically significant differences ofthe values o fthe 24th week as compared with the 12th week in all ofthe tests; 2) aproximation of scores to the minimum standards of excellence of the Anny; 3) in some of the tests the poorer performances surpassed the minimums required at the 12th week, before intervention; and 4) differences between norms recognized in the manual and those practices that were utilized at the site. A discussion and subsequent conclusions bring together such elements associated with respective charts, tables, graphs and appendices. It has been taken account aspects of the Military Training Program such as encompassment; comparisons with programs of other nations; adoption of bases of theory and training; objetives, fundamentals and tests of physical evaluation. Aspects ofi ts implementation were also considered, as professional qualification in training, and results of the same relating to specific organic systems. In summary, it can be concluded that the Military Training Program shows no evidence that could be effected by proposed principles, as "preventive health maintenance"
