RESUMO

AIMS: The incidence of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy ranges from 5% to 57%, and is a complication that impacts the quality of life of these patients. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of early pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), for urinary incontinence after radical retropubic prostatectomy. METHODS: From August 2006 to March 2008 a randomized controlled trial was developed with 46 men who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer. The enrolled patients were randomized into two homogeneous groups: control x study. The control group had no formal training in PFMT. Patients of experimental group took part of early pelvic floor rehabilitation. Follow-up included pelvic floor muscle assessment by the PERFECT scheme, International Continence Society Questionnaire (SF-ICIQ) and 24-hour pad test. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed between the intervals in muscle strength assessment (p = 0.0003). Variance Analysis indicated no significant difference between the groups Quality of Life variable. Variance analysis showed no significant difference during the pad test between groups. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference between groups; the hypothesis that pelvic floor exercises helped to decrease the time of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy was not confirmed in this study, probably due a small sample size on this study
