RESUMO

This study assessed the effects of a training program given to familiar carers for high dependent elderly in home care program. Out of 56 carers, 47 were woman (21 daughters, 19 mives, four daughters-in-law and three grandchildren). From the 9 male carers, 7 were husbands and 2 were sons. They took part in na 8-week socio-educacional training program, in which themes about knowledge, skills and attitudes towards the care of the elderly were discussed. A questionnaire was used as na evaluation tool in the pre-test, in the immediate post-test and in the following 3 and 6 months. The data were analysed by statistical methods using univariate technique. The results showed that in the knowledge dominion and in the skill dominion, the careers had a significant improvement yet in the post-test. In the dominion attitudes, some improvements occurred in the initial phases but the majority accurred in the final evaluation. The improvement observed in these dominions had direct relationship with the immediate and practical improvements of the carers in performing routine daily care. This most likely occurred due to the methodological tactics adopted in the training, which emphasized the relationship of the care with the well being of the elderly, and with the carer’s work. Therefore, the success of this training reflects the great involvement of the carers with the needs generated by the high dependency of the elderly and by the lack of information on how to facilitate or optimize the care tasks.
