RESUMO

The electrolytical process was applied to the treatment of liquid efIluent originated ftom the citrus processing industry. Work was performed in a bench scale reator, which was set up at the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory - college of Civil Enginnering - State University of Campinas. The reator was made up of plaxiglass and installed on top of a magnetic stirrer - namely a Turb-floc. The electrodos, built in aluminnum, had rectangular shapes and were set at the bottom of the electrolytical cell, being connected to a direct current power supply. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the reactor performance when subuistted to the following conditions: change in rpm; change in the reactor liquid volume; and change in pR. The major analyzed parameters were: Total Suspended Solids, Fixed Suspended Solids, Volatile Suspended Solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Color, pH, Temperature, and Conductivity. Applied current density was in the range of 25 to 150 A/m2, with detention time varying ftom 5 to 60 minutes. The best rotation speed was 50 rpm. There was no significant difference in the reactor performance when varying volumes or pH values in the efIluent. Total Suspended Solids removal was very good, with results near 90%, but organic matter removal, in terms of COD, was poor and smaller than 45%. The eletrolytic process tumed out to be very good in removing Suspended Solids, mainlybecause of its eletrocoagulation and floatation effects.
