RESUMO

New procedures in the treatment of acute Iymphocytic leukemia (ALL) have improved the survival and cure rates. Because of that, observation of late effects can be evaluated. These effects are precocious or late puberty and impaired growth, mainly. In order to evaluate the changes in pubertal development and growth, a retrospective and descriptive study was done with children treated by ALL at the Childhood Hematological Investigations Center Dr. Domingos A. Boldrini. The average ages of thelarche, pubarche and menarche were Gompared to a control group. The study group was divided according to the used cranial irradiation dosis (18- or 24-Gy). and before or after five years old in the beginning of the treatment. The growth evaluation was performed during the treatment and some years after that. The. results have shown early puberty in the studied group. The main associated factor was the age in the beginning of the treatment. Impaired growth was observed during and after the treatment with 18- or 24-Gy cranial irradiation; the most affected group was the one treated with 24-Gy. There was no correlation between age at the beginning of the treatment and growth deficiency
