RESUMO

Introduction: The Word pterygium originates from Greek and means ?small wing?. Scientifically, it?s defined as an invasive displasia of the bulbar conjunctiva on the corneal limb in the eye-slits fissure in a triangular shape and elevated meat aspect. Objective: Determine the best procedure for the surgical treatment of the primary pterygium related to the recidivation, esthetic satisfaction and confort after surgery. Material and Methods: A prospective study was made on 126 patients (126 eyes) primary pterygium grade II beares, diagnosed by biomicroscopy, submitted to a surgery treatment in a period from January 2000 a October 2002 at the Faculdade de Medicina do Triângulo Mineiro. Results: In the group was observed 8 recidivation cases, 6 of that in male and 2 in female. The patients age average was 39,6 years old. The recidivations occurred in average about 3,3 months. 102 patients stated as being very satisfied with stetics and 63 complained of pain after surgery treated with common oral analgesics. Conclusion: The amniotic membrane transplant was satisfactory in the criterions of recidivation rate, stetics patient satisfaction and pain in the first 48 hours after surgery in the primary pterygium treatment. However, we couldn?t affirm that the amniotic membrane transplant has to be considered the first choice in the primary pterygium surgery treatment
