RESUMO

Generation of wastes in the agroindustrial activities is very significant, especially in the case of the slaughterhouses. In Pernambuco, the slaughterhouses are considered as an important contributor for the growing pollution of the receiving water bodies. Despite the available technology for effluents treatment, they are seldom used. The present work evaluates the main aspects of bovine slaughterhouses management in Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR), especially concerning the water use and the wastes disposal; and the feasibility of the anaerobic treatment for the wastewater generated at the municipal slaughterhouse of JaboatÃo dos Guararapes. A physico-chemical characterization and the use of a upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, installed in a pilot plant in that slaughterhouse, were studied. The pilot plant was monitored during 460-days. The monitoring activities were conducted in 5 different phases. The reactor performance was followed by changing the upflow velocities (Vup) by varying the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and using effluent recirculation. The results showed reactor efficiencies in terms of COD removal about 76%, when the upflow velocity was maintained between 0.08 and 0.50 m/h, with a HRT of 25 hours and an organic loading rate OLR of 3.64 kg COD/m3.d; 63% for Vup between 0.50 and 1.00 m/h, HRT of 22 hours and OLR of 4.26 kg COD/m3.d; 52% for Vup between 0.50 and 1.00 m/h, HRD of 12 hours and OLR of 4.74 kg COD/m3.d. During the last phase by decreasing the HRT to 6 hours, the reactor efficiency was the lowest, of only 33%, for Vup between 0.50 and 1.00 m/h and OLR of 7.45 kg COD/m3.d During this last phase a post-treatment study was accomplished, using an granular expanded sludge bed (EGSB) reactor. The efficiency of COD removal in the system (UASB + EGSB) increased about 20%, even considering that an OLR of up to 31.3 kg COD/m3.d. was applied
