RESUMO

It was performed a judicious analysis about the efficacy of the triangulation and compass method in transferring data from computed tomography to the head surface. To achieve this aim radiopaque targets were affixed to the heads of human cadavers, then each specimen underwent computed tomography scanning. Afterwards it was tried a target localization through the triangulation and compass method. The targets were distributed in different regions with a view to ascertain if particular positions would interfere with the accuracy of this method. Anatomical landmarks and radiopaque markers were both used as reference points. Two groups were delineated, one with inclination of the scanner gantry and another with no inclination. When computed tomography scanning was performed without gantry nclination, error of 2.1Â1.7mm was evidenced using anatomical landmarks while using radiopaque markers error of 1.7Â1.2mm was obtained; statistical analysis demonstrated that there was no significant difference between such measures. With gantry inclination progressively increasing, targets localization became less accurate. Targets positions have not interfered with the method accuracy. Calculations required 7.1Â1.0min. The sources of error were analyzed. Applicability of the method was supported by its utility for craniotomy placement, biopsies sampling and aspiration of cysts, hematomas, and abscesses. With regard to data transference from computed tomography to the head surface it was shown that the triangulation and compass method is as effective as neuronavigation and slightly less effective than usual stereotaxis. When compared to others methods, the advantages relating to accuracy and feasibility were clear. In addition, it should be emphasized the low cost and minimum discomfort of this procedure
