Traduzir para comunicar : a tradução como componente comunicativo no ensino-aprendizagem de inglês como língua estrangeira

RESUMO

The aim of this research is to investigate translation as a communicative act and linguistic skill integrated with the four traditional skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and with the principles of the Communicative Approach. Field research was carried out at a public language school in the Federal District, Brazil, the methodology employed being of the ethnographic quali-quantitative type. Teacher-research, recorded classes, field notes, written and oral reports, questionnaires, transcriptions and interviews were used to gather data. In this study, a group of 40 Brazilian EFL students with at least six years of effective learning took part in a Translation Project over a period of 11 weeks. Students beliefs about translation and its importance in the process of learning a foreign language were investigated. These were compared with the attitudes of three teachers from the regular course the students subject were attending, regarding the use of translation in daily classroom practice. The results show that students consider translation a skill associated with and integrative of the other four skills, acknowledging its benefits and communicative potential that make the process of learning a foreign language more meaningful and motivating, without contradicting the Communicative Approach philosophy. Their teachers, meanwhile, tend to neglect the use of translation, despite accepting it as a linguistic skill in the teaching of a foreign language.
