RESUMO

The watershed of the Rio das Mortes is a region in the State of Minas Gerais characterized by several mining, iron works, industries, and tanneries. The aims of this study were: to establish natural background contents of trace elements for soils and sediments; and to identify sites contaminated by trace elements. In order to detect contamination spots, it was made an office survey at the environmental agencies searching for potential contamination sources recorded at such agencies. That survey oriented the field work. Waters, sediments, and soils were sampled at 80 different spots from 2005 to 2006. Turbidity, pH, electrolyte conductivity, P, N, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Zn were determined. The results showed that: a) in the Rio das Mortes Basin, the agriculture does not constitute an increasing factor of trace elements contamination; b) a major influence of urban centers is verified, regarding trace elements contamination; c) there was no statistical difference for trace elements content in sediments collected in sites under anthropogenic influence and in pristine sites. That probably happened due to the very sandy composition of the sediments; d) it was verified contamination in soils at certain sites by Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Mn. Future studies are suggested focusing on the following trace elements in the soils of these sites: Pb (Dores de Campos e Prados), Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Mn (Nazareno e SÃo Tiago), Cr and Ni (SÃo JoÃo del Rei) and Cu (Barbacena).
